Frank's Story

Life FRANK AKER DMD FAGD 1. My Photo was taken in Aug. 2005 for the pracice webpage. Yes, I know, I need updated photos since its been 5 years. 2. I'm very grateful that in this up-and-down world, that the Lord saw fit to grant me more UPs than downs. 3. I'm simply a product of the Columbus School System. I was provided (wheather I wanted it or not) with a far better education than avaliable at most U.S. schools. Caveat - I still can't spell, must have missed that day. 4. I started civilian life working at Cummins. I was determined to be a focused "Company Man". My progress was limited. I needed a degree to move on. Fortunately, the G.I. Bill and savings was enough for I.U.'s Business School. Cummins pulled strings to have me placed into IU's first Executive MBA Class. A year later, I bowed to my Granfather's influence rather his insistance (he was a physcian) and switched to Arts & Sciences to pursue a profession. This was a difficult decsion - I acually took time to think about it rather to act on impulse - wish I had done this with other aspects of my life! 5. "Our War" put me back into uniform again, this time I wore Navy blue. They decided to send me on to Dental School, Endodontic (Root Canals) Post Grad School and I Interned/Residency at Great Lakes Naval Hospital. Most of my career was spent globtrotting with the Seabees and Marines. Then the Reagan Administration began to rebuild the military. "Experienced" Active Duty personel were in short supply 'remember the CARTER administration?'. During this time I was a member of the CNP and made some influencial contacts. Thanks to their efferts, I was reclassified, passed the special background investigation and sent on many "unusual" assignments (does the new helment look familiar?)during this time. Being an attache in London was my personal favorite, I worked for the Ambassodor and had a chance to learn the English Languge! 6. Under the pretext of 'Civilian Assistance Programs', Washington sent me as the military advisor to the Contras. This was after being on the planning team and had my 15 minutes of fame in Grenada. The Navy then sent me on to a series of Colleges for my work in D.C.. I worked at State and occasionally briefed the President. No pressure there!!! My publishing career was unexpected. Someone had peiced together some of my reports on Grenada and had it published. I soon had a call from Gen. George S. Patton Jr.(the son)to send him my impressions from my trip to the Middle East concerning the...Expand for more
Yom Kippur War. I still putter around with it, but a writer I'm not. 7. I retired and started civilian practice in Columbus. The family farm with its much photographed 'Round Barn' was the first thing I had to deal with. It was sold and the new owners agreed to have the barn donated to Amish Acres. I wanted to and should have settled down with a good Columbus girl. I found that I was still as intimadated by them, as I was in H.S. and married a Californian instead. I soon found out that she looked down on the midwest in general and Columbus in particular. BIG MISTAKE - I KNOW!!! The inevitable big "D" motivated me to hide my shame and make a fresh start. I moved to North Dallas where I bought into an office park development and set up shop. Life in Dallas has been rewarding! Many missed opportunities - yes, but many - many more blessings received!!! 8. My current plans are made possible by a windfall from the sale of the family (the whole Aker family) ship yards in Scandinavia. It includes building another clinic in Mckinney, North Dallas. In addition, I can seriously work on my hobby of collecting relious artifacts. One of the ten certified replicas of the Shroud of Turin is in my hands (rather in a vault). I hope to have it on permanent dislay at the Museum of Biblical Arts soon. I am now negotiating to aquire one of the "Ink and Blood" touring exibits. It also should be in a the museum. It may sound like a strange hobby for me, but became hooked when I found my first Cuniform Tablet in the Middle East! 9. I am really eager to hear from 'the Ole gang' again and hear about their families. This time I don't want to lose touch!!! In retrospect, the people I think about the most, liked the best, and could honestly ever call my friends were all from my High School days. I miss watching the Basketball team (remember the fun when Stearman sent in 'Furgason's Raiders' to finsh off a beaten team? I miss the band, I still find myself humming their "el Cid" at times. I miss all the people and the "cruising around Big Boy". I miss of course most of all, my youth!!! 10. I joined the "Classmates" site, last summer to contact some of the folks I had the privilage of going to school with. I must say, I'm surprised almost daily on who visits my page!! Then after looking them up in the log, I ask myself, "did I have a class with them or are they just looking everyone up"? I must appologize for not responding immediately. BEWARE, I will catch up and someday send you all a big HI!!
