Fred's Story

Frederick Glanville Gillespie, resident of Knoxville, TN, formerly San Jose, CA passed away in his sleep October 29, 2011. He was 58. Born on February 6, 1953 in Palo Alto, CA Fred was the son of Betty Glanville Gillespie, a clerk at Lockheed, and Jack Louis Gillespie, a truck driver. He attended Los Altos High School. His later education included courses in television production, emergency medicine, and HVAC, mostly at Foothill College. As a volunteer for the American Red Cross Fred taught CPR. Certified to drive hazardous (hazmat) materials vehicles, charter buses, school buses, and double/triple trailers, he worked as a driver for Fotomat, O. White & Sons trucking and AAA Ambulance. From 1983 to 1985 he owned a Santa Clara coffee shop, Common Grounds Espresso. ce in the Bay Area "bus rodeo" in 1997 and sixth place in the subsequent national bus competition. Fred also served in the 2005 Hurricane Katrina call that brought bus drivers from all over the country to aid the people of the gulf. He was a devout Christian though he did not belong to a church. His interests included computers, cars, movies and gaming. A resident of Knoxville since 2008, he is survived by sister Marsha Levy Schmiedeskamp and brother-in-law Robert Schmiedeskamp of Santa Clara, CA, nieces Dawn Levy of Knoxville, TN and Cappy Bray of Joppa, AL, and brother-in-law Phil Bray of Joppa AL, and many friends who appreciated the great joy and mischief he infused into everything he did. A memorial has been held in Knoxville TN. A second memorial will be held February 6, 2012, at a private residence. Published in San Jose Mercury News/San Mateo County Times on February 3, 2012
