Fred's Story
Life
After graduation from Monrovia High School in 1962, I attended Mt. Sac for two years, got married and had two sons, Mike and David. After a short stint with the phone company, I became a police officer, first with Claremont and then, Pomona. For the past 36 years I have owned a bail bond company (Herbert Bail Bonds), headquartered in Upland, with a second office in Pomona. I am since divorced and have two wonderful grandsons. I just finished building a riverfront house in Bullhead City, AZ. By the way, Larry Kopecky ('62 Monrovia High school) is/was my contractor.
College
I have fond memories of Mt. Sac, but I was having too much fun to be much of a student. I was a member of Phi Sigma Fraternity, an off-campus fraternity, that was lots of fun. We had other chapters at Citrus College, Pasadena City College, and a couple of JC's in San Diego. The Viet Nam War snuffed out our fraternity but close friendships still exist.
Military
I was traveling in Quebec, Canada, when my draft notice arrived in 1965. So....I headed home, we...Expand for more
nt to the Pasadena Draft Board and took my physical. Before they could take me I joined the National Guard (40th Armor) and was assigned to the Monrovia Armory.
My story is backwards from others, because a lot of guys headed TO Canada when they got their draft notice.
Since the Army was mobilizing for Viet Nam, Fort Ord was too crowded for many of us in the Guard to go to basic training. In 1967 I joined the Claremont Police Department. I would go the my Guard's weekend duties and to Summer Camp every year out at Fort Irwin, but never got to basic training.
In 1969 I went to a weekend meeting at the Armory and they lined us all up and told us we were going to active duty and going to Viet Nam. It reminded me of Berger (Treat Williams) in the Movie "Hair" in line to get on the troop carrier plane to go to Viet Nam and he wasn't even in the Army. So...I got out of line walked into the CO's office and quit, putting my name back into the draft.
Since I was a police officer, I somehow never got drafted and avoided the trip to Viet Nam.
