Fred's Story

Wow, I posted a note a few months ago and now can only add 200 characters.. I am mostly recovered from previous surgeries and the motorcycle accident I mentioned. I take some stuff to help me out. So I bought a John Deere tractor back in January 2023. I just love working on what I now call my farm. I've made some improvements such as building a metal building, putting in gates, etc. I've bush hogged about 10 acres so far and plowed up some ground and seeded it to make a food plot for the deer. Looking forward to hunting season. So now I ride my URAL with a sidecar all over the place. It's a lot of fun. I rode downtown with a club for a charity event last month, parked on the square with all the other bikes and had a 20-something year old girl try to pick me up. Ha. She told me she would like to be the ballast in my side car. Whoooeeee. I had my buds come over and get her away from me. Make me laugh. I am at least 50 years older than her. Nothing exciting is going on so I will say Adieu for now. So after HS graduation I tried college for a year at SUNY in Farmingdale for Automotive Technology and promptly flunked out. I think the strip bar across the street had something to do with it. I joined the Navy and ended up in Corpus Christi, Texas. Not a bad place to be. I got used to it and then decided I liked it. I got out of the NAVY and stayed there and went to work as an Industrial Mechanic in the Texas oil fields. Hard, hard work. I got married and had a kid. Decided I would be old before my time if I stayed working in the oil field so I re-enlisted in the Navy and got shipped off on a Med cruise right away on the USS John F Kennedy aircraft carrier. I was the supervisor for the Aircraft Starting and Cooling System. Spent two years floating around and got divorced. A dark time for me. So I decided to go back to college and get a degree. There was just me to worry about. I moved to Port Charlotte, Florida and stayed with my folks for awhile while I went to college down in Fort Myers. Hey, I found out if I actually read the books and worked some problems all this stuff wasn't so hard after all. I ended up getting a scholarship for a degree in Physics at the Univ. of West Florida in Pensacola. This was by far one of the hardest things I have ever done. I thought I was pretty smart and found out I'm not! Anyway, I graduated and landed a job at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama and been here ever since. I have been very fortunate, I worked in the test area for a couple of years doing data acquisition and control of rocket engine tests, then went to work in the Avionics Lab and designed and tested computers for Physics experiments that flew on the Shuttle, mostly in Space lab. I did that for 15 years and then transferred up to the Chief Engineers Office and worked on Micro-Gravity experiments. I got tired of all the BS and went back to work in the Lab as a Systems Engineer on the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor System (GBM). Google it. I built most of the GSE and cabling and designed all the environmental tests and installed it on the satellite. So I retired from NASA in 2007, right in the middle of all the testing for the GBM. But I came right back to work as a contractor a week later. Now I work for Jacobs Engineering. I finished up the FERMI satellite and then started working on the Environmental Control & Life Support System (ECLSS). Specifically, I was one of three Lead Engineers for the Urine Processing System. Yep, We turned pee back into water for the astronauts to drink. This was a very stressful job so after a few years I transferred over to a Video Imaging Lab. Now I am developing camera systems for the new SLS systems. I was recently made the Lead Test Engine...Expand for more
er for the project. I didn't want the position but we are shorthanded so I was forced into it. So along the way, I managed to get married to Pamela and we have a beautiful daughter, Rita. She graduated HS last year and is in college studying for a Nursing degree. My wife has a degree in Math with a lot of graduate work. She also works for NASA as a Computer Engineer. I should never have sent her to college. It is way to hard to argue with her now. She learned to be logical and rationale. I like to do all kinds of stuff for fun. I started SCUBA diving back in the '80's and in addition to diving around the Florida coast I worked in the Neutral Buoyancy Facility training astronauts. I've done some competitive shooting and like to go deer hunting. I collect old guns and restore them and load all my own ammo. I do woodworking, have a Corvette and am in the Corvette Club and have a Triumph Bonneville motorcycle. I do most all of my own work. I am also a member of the local Baptist Church and help out whenever they ask me for anything. So it's been awhile since I've been here. I guess it's time for an update. Things seem to be going well. I sold my hunting property a couple of years ago cause it was pretty much up the side of a mountain. I am just getting too old to hike up 300 to 400 feet every time I go hunting. I have degenerating disks and sciatica acts up occasionally. I bought new property about 10 miles North of Athens, AL last year. The property has gently rolling hills. I can drive to any place on the property. It is about a half mile from the Elk River and I plan to build a house and retire out there. It is more peaceful than most of you could believe. So it is a wooded lot and 15 acres in the middle is cleared and I rent it to a local farmer. He grew Wheat on it over the winter and just planted Soy. Can you believe I am classified as a farmer now. I am registered with the USDA and even have a farm number. I never expected this. So I am still working for Jacobs Engineering but only 32 hours a week. I just finished designing a series of tests for equipment (video cameras and computers) that will be taken to a facility for radiation testing to estimate their survival rate in space. It sounds a lot more cool when I read it that it is doing the actual work. I am spending more time with the motorcycle clubs. We went on a ride today (Saturday) up to Lynchburg, TN to see an old classic motorcycle shop that had bikes from the 50's and 60's. Then went to lunch on the river in the local State Park. The weather was perfect and the ride through the country along old country roads had breathtaking views at several points as we came around the mountains and valleys. The Triumph Club sponsored the Big Brothers/Big Sisters annual picnic this year. It was back in July. It turned out great. I rented a tow behind grill and did all the cooking (120 hot dogs and 120 burgers). Another member had bought half a cow earlier in the year and ground up the meat and pressed the burgers and donated it to the cause, Others made potato salad, donated drinks and condiments, you get the idea. It was a great time for those kids. I love doing stuff like that. It seems to help make life worthwhile. So I am on Facebook if anyone cares. I don't post a lot but you are welcome to see what I'm up to. Tomorrow is the first Sunday of the month and looks to be busy. I am on the security detail at church in the morning and then the Triumph Owners Club has their monthly meeting at the Irish Pub. Man I am already craving a cold beer and some Irish stew! Not sure how all this stuff works. Don't know if anybody sees this stuff or not, but I just posted a picture of a 1972 Triumph Daytona motorcycle I have restored. Enjoy!
