Military
June 1980 .... March 1972
Electronics Technician (US Navy), Reactor Operator
While in the US Navy I served two tours of duty as a Staff Instructor Operator at the A1W prototype reactor. The staff operators not only train Navy personnel to operate safely the Navy's nuclear reactors but must be exceptional operators themselves to provide the safe operation of an actual reactor while still training another individual in its operation. The staff also maintains the reactor and associated electronics equipment.
Assigned aboard the USS Bainbridge for two years. Leading Engineroom Reactor Controls Petty Officer in #1 engine room.
I attended Electronics Technician Maintenance School that covers electronic equipment trouble-shooting and repair of the complex reactor controls equipment of the Navy.
Attended Electronics Technician C-7 School after the first tour at A1W prototype. This school is considered to be at least equivalent to BSEE in course content.
Attended three other Electronics Technician schools before prototype training. Nuclear Power School is the equivalent of BSNE in course structure and content with Master's degree level content in nuclear theory. ET-B school which gives necessary background for an electronics technician or equivalent of ASEE. Basic Electronics and Electricity school provides elementary background information for electronics.
