Gail's Story

Life My Spouse: Steve Haferkamp Where I work: Siteman Cancer Center-Barnes Jewish St. Peters My Pets Our dog.One cat My Kids One son, Scott. One step-son, Aaron. School Quite frankly I hated high school but loved to be there with friends. I worked in the office during study hall and would help a lot of people get excused tardies or absences from school. The only tardy slip I couldn't excuse was for Ray Newcomb. He would be there just about every day and would write down the reason he was late for class with answers like, "I was walking past the study hall and 20 girls jumped me so I turned around and walked past it again". Another one was that he was being chased around the school building by a heard of jackalopes. I will never forget the time we were walking outside between the two buildings for class and Jeanette Hollis got a present on the top of her head from a bird. I remember split shifts and Nike sandwiches and nine minutes to wolf it down. Oh and less we forget...the bomb scares. I wonder how many of those calls came in to the school by the payphone outside the office??!! We had a few strange science teachers over the years at Zumwalt. Not all of them but you have to admit there were several. And when rumors spread somewhat that Paul McCartney died all you had to do was slip a note in Christine Maue's locker, saying just that, and you could hear her scream all the way down the hall. They probably heard her on the second floor too. I can't say there was ever a dull moment at Zumwalt. College Off and on after I graduated I took a few courses every now and then but I didn't decide what I wanted to do until computers came along. It sure would have been nice to have been able to use one in school...as well as a calculator because I was never good with math. In 1991 I graduated from Sanford Brown College. While attending they were accredited by Missouri University to give out Associates degrees. I was just going for a certificate in prog...Expand for more
ramming, management and business. But they were approved and I just had to take two more courses. I worked a full third shift at the envelope company in O'Fallon and when I got off at 7:30 am I went straight to classes for three days a week and two years. Although I did not go through the graduation ceremony, I was the first Sanford Brown student to receive an Associates Degree and I surprised myself by having a grade point average of 3.5. I really enjoyed Sandford Brown. They didn't throw a lot of crap on you that you were not going to use and spent more time on the things you would use and need. The instructors were great. Typing was a challenge because they teach the Cortez Peters method instead of Ms. Montgomery's method. Workplace Between 1971 I worked at the following places: Machine operator for an envelope co., Real Estate Loan Dept. for South Side National Bank in St. Louis, The Pizza Place in Sullivan, MO, a boarding home, took care of an elderly couple one summer and worked for Kroger all in Sullivan, MO. and the last job in this area was in Owensville for a printing and bindery co. In 1987 I moved back to O'Fallon and worked for about 10 years at another envelope company. Then I worked as a receptionist for the St. Charles Co. Board of Realtors, then I kept books and ran the office for John's Boat Harbor in St. Peters and then I went to work for Security Consultants in O'Fallon. In November of 2001 I started working for Missouri Cancer Care. I worked as a receptionist for the medical office in St. Charles for a year and then received a promotion to Information Assistant and was moved to my own little office at Wentzville, MO. All in all I love my job. Missouri Cancer Care has a wonderful group of physicians, nurses and other employees. They are excellant care givers. As of July 2007, I am now working as a Clinical Research Associate for Barnes Jewish St. Peters Siteman Cancer Center. Military Never was involved with the military.
