Gail's Story

Life Some of my oldest friends may remember that I grew up in Murphy Candler Park. At Chamblee HS I was on the chess team, Beta Club, and was one of those pep squad cheerleader wish-they-weres. They let me out early for good grades and I went off to DeKalb Junior during the senior year where Gale Goodin tempted me to write and came back to graduate with the CHS class of '72. After a brief time at George Washington in DC, I graduated from GSU in '78, where I was a psych major and caretaker in the monkey lab for a couple of years. Worked for DeVry Institutes as a New Student Coordinator and traveled around America for quite a while as Regional Manager Marketing and Sales Support. I was a technical writer for Franchise companies for a few years, documenting their systems of operation. Then I moved to England in '91 by myself, which was a bit daunting, then on to Holland in '96, again alone. Was Nortel Networks' Business Improvement and Quality Manager for their European Data Division and Global Customer Care Division for 7 years and got laid off in 2002. Like any QA person, my job was to examine how the company worked and try to make it more efficient, cost effective and customer oriented. Business trips took me to seven major cities of Europe regularly. Sounds great, but you usually see the hotel and the office. You are close to everything you could want for vacations though. n, I've been repeatedly to Australia, camping in the outback in a tent that perches above the truck, falling in love with the tiny, coastal pearling town of Broome, WA, the Gibb River Road and other places that will be gone soon; got my advanced Open Water certificate as a scuba diver on the Great Barrier Reef, toured the Rockies and the Canyons of the Southwest and spent a lot of time in Spain at the Paradores (old mansions and palaces converted into hotels by the Spanish gov't). Most recently, I've been exploring the former Eastern Block. Prague and Krakow are terrific destinations. Poland, incidentally, is going to be a big tourist draw in a few years. The menus are translated, the young people study English, and the prices are lower than most. Nowadays, I visit my family a few times a year and I live with a Netherlander, Bas Van Oorschot, in Rotterdam and am studying the Dutch language. It is not as much fun as French was at CHS with M. Moskowitz (I was called Nicole in that class and would love to find my skit partner, Jean Claude, whose real name escapes me.) We have no kids and no pets. So sometimes I envy those that went down the other road. But I can't complain and I'm always looking forward to the next phase. My sister, Sharon, runs the Helendorf in Helen, Ga and my brother, Buddy, works for a plumbing supplier in Chamblee. My mom, Jo, is still on a farm near Cleveland, Ga.
