Gail's Story
Life
I graduated from Del Mar High School in 1983. I went to UC Irvine and received a BS degree in Civil Engineering (primary study in Structural Engineering) in 1988. I immediately worked 21/2 years for DKS Associates, a transportation engineering and planning private firm, located in downtown Los Angeles. During that time, I lived in Studio City, Torrance and Hermosa Beach. In 1991, I went to work for Katz, Okitsu and Associates, which was another engineering/planning firm owned by friends.
By November 1993, after being sick with Chronic Fatigue & Immune Dysfunction Syndrome for 8 years and Fibromyalgia for 4 years, I became too ill to continue working and went on full-time disability. At the time, I was living with my boyfriend in Monrovia. However, because I no longer could care for myself and my illnesses were deteriorating my relationship with my boyfriend, I moved back to San Jose, CA, to live with my parents.
In 2000, my mother sold her home in San Jose. Because I could not afford housing in the San Francisco and Los Angeles metropolitan areas, which are where I would love to live, I chose to move to Fresno with my mother. She moved into a senior retirement complex and I moved by myself into an apartment.

e 1992, I've spent much time and effort on trying to regain my health; I've gone through drug therapy, acupuncture, massage therapy and psychoanalysis. On good days, I have about 50% of the energy I once had. On bad days, I'm stuck in bed all day. I may never be the vivacious, outgoing person I once was. I continue to battle the symptoms of these illnesses and hope that one day, I may work at least part-time and do some of the physical activities that I used to do before.
I spend much of my day in bed. I am able to spend afternoons with my family for a couple of hours. The rest of the day, I try to amuse myself through television, the stereo and books and magazines. Being on the computer and telephone are enjoyable. However, these tasks require much energy and so are limited. When I can, I go on 3-5-mile walks. Walking curbs my cravings to go running and bicycling. It's not the same as strenuous exercises, but it's better than nothing.
I have a network of friends around the world. I still love socializing and meeting new people. However, my health prevents me from doing so. I'd love to reconnect with as many people possible from my alma maters. At the same time, I'm enjoying the strong friendships that I do have.
