Garry's Story
Life
Longevity, wealth and good looks are overrated. Only the good die young, broke and ugly. (Please if you are visiting the site "sign in"...each name either brings a smile or a blank stare of who's that?)
Religion is not essential to having a moral compass or living an ethical life. Choose to be a good person, then teach it to your children. And every time you hear CSNY sing it on the radio, crank up the volume and sing along with them.
School
I was fortunate at Linton to have several teachers who both taught and inspired students.
I hope too that I am regarded as such a teacher by the students I've taught at Bishop Scully and at U of Penn. (Thanks to all who have written me, even after 30+ years, to express your memories)
College
Why the first degree is called BS:
So much of the college learning didn't require a classroom or professor.
About my D.M.D.
In too many ways, advanced degrees don't require higher thinking; just more learning, and that's unfortunate.
Workplace
Just whistle while you work... but just don't try eating crackers while you do! And, retire early! (now that I've done it 7-08)
PS: My kids have the koolest jobs ever!
Military
Thank you to those who defend (have defended) our great nation.
I hope those who choose when and where to put you in harms...Expand for more
way make their choices for the right reasons.
I think time and history shows Vietnam was a poor choice to send our young to die without a valid purpose or a well thought out plan.
I fear the same will be true of Iraq.(1/04)
Thanks also to my daughter Jackie for her continued contribution to our nation's safety. (8/05)
The "verdict is still out" regarding Afghanistan where my daughter Jackie is currently (3-09) located at KAF(Kandahar Province)
6/21/09 Home safely! My best fathers' day ever!
8/09 "update"
As 60 soon approaches, I look back and realize how fortunate I have been. I've lived the American dream, although upstaged lately by our president and our most recent supreme court justice. Along the way people and places have shaped my person and left their indulible markings. The obvious first metion goes to my family. There is no greater gift in life than a loving spouse and great children. Others have helped me to understand love and loving. Thank you LSA, PBR, AMM and KBT. I'm still too macho to list guys who helped shape my life...but thanks. And then there are places; the incubators of growth: LHS, Union, Penn, and perhaps above all, Camp Chingachgook.
It's all good and keeps getting gooder!
I had my second hole-in-one last week.
More than my share of good fortune!
