Garry's Story
Doesn't seem like 40+ years since graduation. Left MN that August to CA where I attended UC Riverside for 2 years. I was a pre-veterinary student and lettered in swimming and water polo. I transferred to UC Davis where I attended the School of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 1972. I practiced both large and small animal medicine in northern CA until 2003 at which time I sold my practice and my wife and I moved back to MN and purchased a home on Pokegama Lake in Cohasset, MN. In 1997 I had gotten involved in disaster response and my interest and involvement increased until I was offered the position of commander of a new federal veterinary disaster response...Expand for more
team for the Department of Health and Human Serviece in the central region of the US. I am responsible for approximately 65 veterinarians and technicians who respond to such incidents as the World Trade Center, Hurricane Katrina and most recently Haiti. We are responsible for rescued and shelter animals, search and rescue and cadaver dogs, and for public health issues related to animal and human health. I completed my Master's in Public Health at UMN this year, completing the dream of graduating from the school I grew up next to. Currently I do some relief clinical work and continue teaching and training veterinarians at veterinary schools across the country.
