Gary's Story

* After graduating I went to U of Oregon for 2 years, had a blast, hardly studied.
-- Then I transferred to UC Berkeley and had to work :-( . BS, EECS in 1981
* Got out and traveled my buns off: 2.5 years through Europe, Middle East (before it became a genocidal hell). * I was immortal -- go without food or sleep for days when the money ran out, ended up living/working in Israel. Studied at the Taliban academy for awhile (Orthodox Jewish Yeshiva), have to say it was a really good time... no, not religious, but I like some of the harder drinking Hassidic guys.
* Home 5.5 years: worked at a brain science startup, quit and started a consulting business living in Woodside, rented a cottage next to Joan Baez.
* PhD 4 years. Grad school: Cognitive and Neural Systems Boston University
* Got married to Sonya Rost. Still married. 3 kids:
-- Moriah (now a freshman at UMD), Simcha at Gunn High School, Haviva at JLS
* Quant/options trader, Wall St kind of job at First Union National Bank (now Wells Fargo). Hated it! Depressed for 2....Expand for more
5 years. Moved back to Palo Alto!
* Principle Engineer, Intel Corporation. 10 years (!!)
-- Started the Open Source Computer Vision Library (OpenCV). You use it every time you use Google maps, streetview, or see a Google robot whiz by. Used in every CS department in the world now.
-- Led the computer vision team on Stanley, the robot that won the $2M DARPA Grand Challenge. It now sits in the Smithsonian and is the "father" of streetview and "grandfather" of the Google robot.
* Startup 1.5 year 2006.5. VideoSurf. 2nd employee. Sold to Microsoft in 2011
* Consulting Professor, Stanford University 7.5 years.
-- Co-founded the Stanford AI project that became Willow Garage Robotic Incubator
* Willow Garage, robotics incubator 5 years. Fun stuff
* Founded Industrial Perception Inc. 1 year, Sensory guided robots, sold to Google. 2013
* Founded the West Coast Office of Magic Leap. 2.5 years. Augmented Reality, Helped raise $1.5B(!)
* 2016:
-- Founder, CEO: Robotics Actual
-- OpenCV.com, Chief Executive.
-- Invested and/or advising and/or on the boards of 11 companies
