Gary's Story
Life
I've been married to my high school sweetheart, Bernadine McCabe (also a 1965 Reagan graduate) since 1969, and its still going strong. We have two adult children who are both successful, and who we have been very proud of from the moment of their births. Our son and his wife have now presented us with our first grandchild. My wife and I are now retired college instructors, and enjoy retirement immensely. Even after a bout of prostate cancer, my life is good, and I thank God for all of my blessings.
School
I loved school at Robert Browning Elementary, and I loved going to John H. Reagan Senior High---great times and wonderful memories. The junior high years were rather traumatic for me. Puberty and my Dad dying all made these years very unhappy.
My favorite elementary school teacher was Mrs. Johnston in 4th grade, and my two favorite high school teachers were Mrs. Nancy Hejl and Mrs. Sandra Streusand.

College
I truly enjoyed my 4-years at the University of Houston. It was during those years that the university gained national prominence in football (Coach Bill Yeoman & Warren McVey (the first black player in a southern Division I school) & Top Ten rankings), in basketball (Coach Guy Lewis & Elvin Hayes & #1 rankings & Final Fours), and NCAA National Titles in Golf.
Yes, I remember the all-nighters and lots of reading and studying, but they are all happy memories at a great time in my life.
Military
Well, the fours years of active duty in the U.S. Air Force were both stressful and fantastic. Of course, it was the Viet Nam war period.
I had wonderful friends during that time, and was most fortunate to be CONUS during my duty, so I had my wife and daughter with me. I realize how indeed lucky (blessed) I was compared with so many of my fellow soldiers who wound up in-country during that awful war.
