Gary's Story

Married to Diane (Altadonna) Dyhouse on 9/7/1968. We have two sons, Gary A and Mark C, but unfortunately no grandchildren. Gary and his wife, Rose both work for the State of Missouri in Jefferson City.. Mark is a social worker for the Crider Institute in St. Charles. I was able to get Bachelor and Master's Degrees in Civil Engineering at Rolla in 1964 and 1966 and a second Master's in Engineering Management in 1974. I spent two years with McDonnell-Douglas and then 32 with the St. Louis District, Army Corps of Engineers, retiring in 1999. Most of that time I was Chief of Hydrologic Engineering where my section was responsible for studies to determine levee height, pump station capacities, dam design and flood height determinations. I taught undergraduate and graduate level hydraulics courses for Washington University and the Graduate School of the Missouri Institute for Science and Technology for 20 years in evenings. My "15 minutes of fame" occurred during and after the Great Flood of 1993 in the Midwest. I did numerous radio, television, newspaper and magazine interviews for the local, national and inter-national media on the impacts of the flood and the positive flood reduction effects of control structures. Following the flood, I appeared in several films on t...Expand for more
he subject including PBS' NOVA and the BBC.. Since retirement from the Corps, I've performed consulting work in hydraulics, served as expert witness in several legal cases and taught 3 and 5-day workshops around the country and in Europe for many years. The workshops were on flood plain computer modeling, detention pond design, urban water management system design and using FEMA procedures for flood plain modeling and analysis. I also wrote a professional textbook describing flood plain analysis using the most popular computer program in the world. This 700 page book was published in 2005 and is still in use in engineering colleges and by practicing engineers. I am now fully retired and concentrate on golf, bridge, model railroading and reading. Diane and I like to travel and have been on about 13 cruises to locations as far east as Turkey and Israel and as far west as Hawaii. I got my first (and likely last) hole in one on March 13, 2018, My life changed greatly on January 15, 2023 when my wife of 54 years passed away from a collapsed lung and congestive heart failure. Its hard ratteling around in an empty house without the one you love. If you still have your spouse, be thankful and treasure every day with him or her. Its really tough without your other half.
