Gary's Story
In high school I was a troublemaker... beyond a shadow of a doubt.
I was rebellious as a teenager, and a runaway. I left home at 15.
I got into a lot of fights through out high school, and ended in juvenile jail for a short season. I was put on probation until I was 18. Ken Farren's partents took me in and became my legal guardians untoil I was 18. Thank God for Ken and his parents.
I was not allowed to graduate my senior year due to a forklift accident at a carpet warehouse where I worked. My leg got caught in between the chains on the forklift and snapped my leg- I had a severe compound fracture to my right lower leg... the leg broke in half at the shin. Because of that I missed a lot of the forth quarter my senior year being in the hospital and then confined to bedrest. Because I missed so much school I was given incompletes on my report card and I had to go to summer school to finish my HS diploma, all with a full-length cast on my leg, and living away from home. I got my first apartment at that time, so I could be close to the school where they held summer school.
Since I was twelve I have written over thirty books. I wrote two books / journals when I decided to hitchhike 15,000 miles around the U.S. with a backpack in my 20's. What an incredible adventure that was. The excitement of traveling by thumb outweighed the perils of hitchhiking. Even though I am now 55 y.o. I would still like to go another 5000 miles hitchhiking again, to break 20,000 miles across the US. If I could, I swear I would do it. My wife told me if I do it to just make sure the rent is paid first. She knows I am nuts.
I was fortunate enough to get some of my poetry published in a book with Henry Taylor who won the Pulitzer for poetry years ago. I use to be a member of the Poetry Soci...Expand for more
ety of Virginia. And I have works published in the "Anthology" published by the Poetry Society of Virginia. Also, I have had several other works published over the years.
Currently I am a general contractor in northern Arizona. I am very happily married and have had five children- all girls! I lost two children to the operating table. Currently I have a 21, 19 and 16 year old supermodels... at least they think they are. And in my book, they are. They all got their looks from their mother.
God found me when I was 29 years old- I was hooked on drugs and alcohol, fighting, stealing, in and out of jail for minor offences- I was a total reprobate. But God has put His love, peace and destiny, within my heart- and I not ashamed to tell the world I love God with all my heart. For to know God is to love God.
As I said, most of high school I was on probation for being incorrigible until I was 18. I was even in juvenile jail for a season. Due to immaturity and confusion, and living from house to house as a runaway, I wasted my education. If I had it to do over I would study harder and apply myself. I skipped a lot of classes and never took SAT's seriously. If I had it to do over I might pursue medicine. I was involved with physical therapy for a season of my life. I do not regret my past-it has made me who I am, and will be.
My wife is beautiful- both in appearance and heart. We just celebrated 14 years together. My five children were from my last marriage.
I miss so many of my friends from Oakton High School. I would love to hear from some of them.
Two of my best friends, Jay McaKercher and Ken Farren, I spoke to a few weeks ago- I had not spoken to them in nearly 20 years. I may fly out to see them and have our own little reuion.
