Gary's Story

I returned to Portland after college, but decided that I would need to relocate to a better job market, so I left for CA, loading my suitcase and golf clubs into my VW hatchback. I settled in Newport Beach, was hired by Disney to drive the monorail at The Happiest Place On Earth, and became the athletic director at a local YMCA. Worked both jobs for a couple of years, and then was hired by a small health plan in Long Beach, to negotiate and maintain their state and federal government contracts. After obtaining some substantial experience in the healthcare business, I was recruited by Kaiser Permanente to establish the first dedicated Labor and Trust Division of a major healthcare company.in the country. I left Kaiser to work for a national healthcare consulting firm, and 20 years ago, started my own consulting firm, which today has several Fortune 500 companies as clients. My proudest business achievement has been as co-founder and principal of one of the first integrated healthcare villages in the world. Called Union Village (union village.net or google union village henderson, nv), this project will bring thousands of jobs to Nevada and significantly raise the quality of healthcare in the state. It is the largest medical project currently under construction in the U.S. Although I have many responsibilities on the project, my two major goals are to establish an international we...Expand for more
llness center on the campus, which will become a medical destination for some of the 41 million tourists who visit Las Vegas every year. We are going to blend eastern and western medical practices and also intend to be a center of excellence for certain medical treatments such as stem cell implants. I also intend to have under construction within 5 years, the first dedicated children's hospital in the state of Nevada. Since I only have two full-time jobs and am a lover of wine, I am also starting an 'urban winery.' Called The Crushed Grape, it will feature winemaking and culinary schools, and will be co-branded with one of the largest wineries in southern CA. The first venue will open in March of 2016. I live in a community called Coto De Caza, in southern Orange County (unfortunately, also home to the Real Housewives of Orange County), and split my time between Coto, Rancho Mirage, and Newport Beach. I also typically am at the Union Village project in Nevada each week. My 17 year-old daughter graduates from high school today (June 17th) and will be off to college in two months. I'm not looking forward to the transition, but she is eager to break out of the bubble! I'm in touch with a lot of guys from high school, from both my class and also '68 and '70. I look forward to making contact with more of my former classmates, and hearing from each of you about your life's journey.
