Gary's Story

Life My legal name is Gerhardt John Jackson and I was named after my grandfather, Gerhardt John Schoenbohm. His father, Gerhard (no “T”) John Schoenbohm was born July 6, 1871 in Bremen, Germany and landed at Indianola, Texas with his parents on November 1, 1878. Gerhard later married Carrie Matilde Gilpen Valls on April 18, 1892 in St. Francis de Paula Catholic Church in San Diego, Texas. Carrie was born in Old Nuecestown, Texas in 1875 and was the daughter of Andrew Ralph Valls and Grace Linn. Grace was the daughter of Edward Linn (born April 28, 1809) and Evaline Patton (born July 19, 1833) of which they were married on November 12, 1850 in Victoria, Texas. You may have heard of Edward Linn and one of his brothers; John, also known as “Juan” Linn, if you are familiar with the history of Victoria. As an early teenager, I would ride my bicycle through Port Lavaca with my rifle over my shoulder, to hike along the shore, north of town, and shoot at cans along the way. I often stopped and read a historical monument that commemorated the site of Linnville. It was a small town for merchant shipping that was established by the brothers and later was pillaged and burned by a Comanche Indian raid. Well, enough about my ancestry in this brief bio and on to my history. I achieved an Amateur radio license and built a Heathkit radio transmitter by the age of 13. I was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout around the time of graduating from Calhoun High in 1978. I attended Texas State Technical Institute in Waco and received 2 Associate of Applied Science degrees, Electronic Technology and Instrumentation Technology. While there, I also participated in the radio and TV repair program towards a certificate. After graduating, enough I thought, my career started with work for Schlumberger in McAllen, Texas. I transferred to Ventura, California for work with Flopetrol Johnson Schlumberger and then back to Alice, Texas for Dowell Schlumberger. After all of the...Expand for more
fluctuations in the oil and gas industry, I decided to try the chemical industry back at home. While working for various contract companies in the area, I attended Victoria College for a certificate in Chemical Process Operations and the ABC Program (Associate Builders and Contract companies) for an Instrumentation IV certificate. The work experience and additional training got me a position with Union Carbide. However, a couple of years ago, Dow Chemical bought Carbide and began reducing personnel. I was laid off last October when the Olefins unit was shut down. I married Cindy Cole on September 15, 1989 and when her son, Chris Cole, approached high school, we decided to become foster parents. After 10 weeks of training and home inspections by fire and health departments, the CPS representative came to our home and said that we are qualified for 9 foster children. She saw the shocked look on my face and assured us that 6 was the most placed in a home and that we already have 1, so 5 would be the most bestowed to us. A few foster children came and went and then 3 from one family came to stay for awhile. During their stay, we received a call about a “new born” that would be for adoption. While we were in the process of adopting the baby, the 3 children that had been with us over a year, became eligible for adoption. We adopted all 4 of the children and then received another call about the baby having a new brother that will be for adoption. After adopting him also, we received another call. We now have 7 children. Chris is 18 and a freshman at Victoria College. Ryan, Samantha, and Dustin are 9, 7, & 5 years old and attend HJM Elementary. Sean Glenn is now 3 years old and named after John Lennon’s son, for his first name, and my father, for his middle name. His brother, Mathew John, is now 2 years old, but we call him “Tank No-No” because he is built like a tank and always into things. The baby is not yet adopted, but we will name him Zachary David.
