Gary's Story

Life Gary Johnson has been in the direct marketing industry for over 25 years. He has an extensive background in marketing strategy development, brand building, catalog, retail, Internet, and database development and marketing, circulation, and advertising. He has held senior level marketing positions with Levenger, PC Connection, Tiger Direct, and other major catalog companies. Gary's experience has touched on all facets of direct marketing and successful catalog businesses. This has included strategic planning, circulation planning, database development, contact strategy development, customer acquisition and retention, positioning and creative, product selection, merchandising, pricing strategies, segmentation, test design, alternate media, space advertising, public relations, call center management, response analysis, forecasting methodologies, modeling, Internet marketing, merge/purge processing, and market research. As Vice President of Marketing at Levenger, he directed the multi?channel marketing programs for the catalog, retail, Internet, and corporate sales divisions. His responsibilities included strategic marketing planning, brand building, catalog circulation planning, database management, sales forecasting and analysis, advertising, and media and public relations. .4 billion PC Connection. He directed all circulation, database management, and direct marketing activities. At Tiger Direct, as Vice President of Direct Marketing, he developed its six million name marketing database, managed the customer list, and executed all mailing programs. He built and maintained databases of three million registered users for many prominent software and hardware companies. Previously, he was Vice President of Marketing at Metromail where he was responsible for the sales of list enhancement services including merge/purge processing, list hygiene, postal sortation, and data overlays to prominent direct marketing companies. He is the creator of The Catalog Club, the original cooperative database of participating catalog companies. Gary holds a B.S. in Industrial Management from Purdue University and received his MBA in Marketing from Loyola University of Chicago. He has been a frequent speaker at Direct Marketing Association conferences, List Day, and Chicago Direct Marketing Day. He has been an instructor of the Basic Course in Database Marketing at the DMA's Collegiate Institute, an awards competition judge of direct marketing promotions for the Florida, Philadelphia, and Chicago Direct Marketing Associations, and a guest lecturer at the Harvard Business School.
