Gary's Story

Life I've been a nomad throughout my life...born outside Philadelphia, moved to NE PA when I was in kindergarten, moved to W/B when I was 8, moved to Sugar Notch (thanks to Hurricane Agnes) in '72, and have moved constantly while serving my country in the US Air Force...in October 2004, I retired from the military after over 24 years of service and I currently work in the defense contractor industry. I have "settled down"...married a good woman, two wonderful children, took advantage of good job prospects when I retired...the military lifestyle was the ideal match for me (discipline, sense of accomplishment, opportunities for all) as I continue to rely upon these traits for my post-AF life. School School was something that came easy to me...the academics, at least...I always tried to fit in (sports, school government, senior play) and did find a group of friends that I could be myself when they were around. Over the years, I lost contact with all of them ("Pongee", "Chumley", "Murdoch", & "Sasquatch"). It's sad that I've forgotten them over the years and the things we used to do (playing cards up at the cabin, cruising through W/B cranking Van Halen on the 8-track, hanging out at John's house over in Plymouth). Those were much simpler days, but based on our class's lack of reunions, I'm guessing it was a time that many of us don't want to revisit... College I began taking college courses in high school (was identified as a 'gifted student')...I dropped the only course I was selected for (calculus) after 5 weeks. As a National Honor Society member, I applied for and was selected for Wilkes College's Hahnemann medic...Expand for more
al program...one of 125 incoming freshmen...after 3 years, 25 would go to med school and do their residencies in NE PA. I only made it a semester and a half (college was NOTHING like high school)...dropped out in March 80...the dismal economy/employment market (and my dad) steered me towards a military career. In the AF, I've had the opportunity to take off-duty classes, earning two associate degrees along with a bachelors and masters degree. Now the hard part...trying to impart the importance of education to our two children... Workplace I worked for a friend of mine in high school...he would buy old, run-down houses and hire me and a few other friends to do the labor and fixing-up. It was a fun way to earn a few bucks. I then worked at a little market in Sugar Notch (I put Ashley on the site...SN wasn't one of the choices) working a meat counter and cash register. Right after high school, I worked at the Wyoming Valley Hospital as a student porter in the kitchen (served meals, washed dishes, general cleaning). It was my first "official" job (got a real paycheck every 2 weeks). I quit when I joined the AF in May 1980. Military I joined the AF in 1980 after I dropped out of college...it was my dad's suggestion (Navy or AF and the AF recruiter was the first door when I got off the elevator). My assignments are already listed on the side of the page. Over the years, the military helped me become who I am now. I loved the camaraderie and order it provided. I went a lot further than a 19-year old really expected and recently completed a long and distinguished career (retired from active duty in October 2004).
