Gary's Story

On the eve of our 50th year reunion, I finally got around to updating my profile. Back in our day, it was easy to lose track of friends and not recognizing the importance of this in our youth. We also didn't have social media and cell phones which make it easier these days. Unlike a lot of people, I have fond memories of high school days. Most of my nostalgic memories are from Colquitz. When I got to Mt View I kind of disappeared from the social scene as I was working a lot and "preparing" for university which in hindsight wasn't as important as it seemed at the time As most of you likely know, Colquitz has been uprooted and transformed into a middle school and Mt. View is no longer physically there; however, much of the surrounding neighborhoods and streets around the schools remain the same. I know some of you are still in Victoria as I have randomly heard from a few of you through coincidence and of course many have been curious but I had no profile to follow up on.. A few I have followed from afar through your letters to the editor in the Times-Colonist. I greatly miss the fledgling rock band days and playing...Expand for more
music in school bands. In high school I was in band and drama and student council. I was fiercely competitive but was never able to crack any of the athletic teams. You guys were just too good but I admired you from afar and supported team sport and events as a fan, especially track and field. I'm still fiercely competitive so maybe I can take you down now if anyone wants to challenge me. My passion is music and I definitely missed my calling and went in the wrong direction when I was at University. I taught briefly in the schools but turned down a position in a remote area that was detrimental to my respiratory. I went on to hotel operations and management which was challenging but stressful. Through it all I continued to play and teach music in military bands and more recently brass and woodwind (concert) bands. I am very nostalgic and would be pleased to hear from any and all former classmates even if you didn't like me. Come on, it's been 50+ years; who holds a grudge for that long. There's lots to revisit I am sure. I am not much into social media but you can also find me on Whats App or rocketeer at telus.net
