Gary's Story

Life Life continues to be an incredible journey, and as I sit here at age 64 I look back in amazement. There are many highlights: Last February (2004) I celebrated my 20th anniversary with my partner Peter in Amsterdam visiting our friends there. I have spent many months in India and Nepal. One memory is living for a month with the brother of the Dalai Lama and the surprise of a private audience with His Holiness at his residence in Dharmasala, India. The weeks spent with fellow Buddhist Richard Gere in India also comes to mind. Five weeks trekking in the Nepalese Himalaya with my sister Sharon, the three Septembers spent as a guest student at Tassajara the Buddhist Monastery in Big Sur. Meeting President Kennedy. Five months hitchhiking in Europe when I dropped out of UC Davis. A 17 day freighter trip from Bilbao Spain to Vera Cruz Mexico as the only English speaker on the ship. Training for an Everest climb in my mid-50s with my friend Dave Schoen who would have been the first heart transplant climber on the mountain had we been able to raise the funds needed. (We did not.) The lessons learned from the experience of lymphatic cancer at age 56. My doctoral work. I received my Doctor of Ministry degree on June 10, 2006. My dissertation is titled: Victorious Blood: A Spiritual Journal. Fellow classmate Jane Naify attended the graduation. The profound lessons learned from having AIDS for the past 16 years and the work it provided me as Executive Director of The Healing Community a camp for families affected/infected with HIV. My life since leaving McClatchy has been rich with many twists and turns. Now at age 66, I am planning a trip to Africa to work with...Expand for more
the HIV communities in Ghana. School Returning to memories of almost 50 years ago is difficult. I joke and say the only thing I learned in high school was typing (which has served me well over the ensuing years.) My favorite teacher was Mrs. Williams, the art teacher and if I'm remembering correctly our class advisor. Certainly two of the highlights of McClatchy were being elected Senior Class Treasurer and the surprise of being selected (with my twin brother, Wayne) to the Pep Squad (if that was the name of those of us with the white sweaters and block "M" letters who cheered our teams on to victory and loss.) I also remember my work on our school paper and the trouble Marcia Carp and I got into with some of our columns, “Just Between Us. I didn'’t realize how political I was then, but Mr. Silver did (do I have his name correct?) and brought me into his office with a scathing lecture on the inappropriateness of one of our columns. We objected to student money being spent on the Nugget Jr that book the school published with our money that covered such things as the history of Sacramento's sewer system. High school was a bitter-sweet time for me. I think I knew almost every one of our class by name, and at the same time was struggling with being gay. Took me to age 29 when in graduate school to acknowledge this. College I have a BA in Art History from the University of California, Davis, where I served on the Art Department's student-faculty advisory committee and represented the Art Department on the Dean's advisory committee. My MA is from the University of Californial, Santa Barbara, and my doctoral degree is from Wisdom University, San Francisco.
