Gary's Story

I left Cincinnati in Aug 1970 when I joined the US Marine Corps. While I was in boot camp I received a letter from General Electric telling me that I received a scholarship from them to attend UC. If I would have received that letter a month earlier I guess my life would have been a little different, but no regrets. I originally enlisted thinking that I would complete my 3 year enlistment and return to Cincy. My plans changed and I ended up completing a 20 year career. After completing my initial training I was stationed in Okinawa and was asked to do some traveling while there. I traveled to Hong Kong, Coast of Vietnam, Philippines, and Mount Fuji, Japan. After my overseas tour I was stationed at Marine Barracks 8 & I in Washington DC. This was very unique duty because this is the unit that services all ceremonies in DC to include The White House, Camp David, Arlington Cemetery and any Military function in the area. I was selected to be one of the 80 Marines that guarded the Brezhnev entourage in the Camp David area in June 1973. Rose and I met in 1973 and we were married in October of 75 just before completing my tour in DC. Following my tour in DC I was then ordered to Recruiter School and stationed in Lakeland, Fl. I also completed a BA in Business from Columbia College of Missouri while on recruiting duty. My following duty stations included Marine Corps Finance Center in Kansas City, MO; Back to Okinawa for a 3 year tour where my son Jerrad was born; Marine Barracks New London, CT; Marine Barracks Subic Bay, Philippines and then stationed at Marine Corps Supply Depot in Albany, GA. where I ...Expand for more
retired as a Master Sergeant. We then returned to Lakeland, Fl in 1990 to live as a family on a more permanent basis. I landed a job at a Holiday Inn in Plant City, FL as a Front Desk Manager. What was great about this Holiday Inn, it was the spring training home for the Cincinnati Reds and that was the year that they won the World Series. Very fortunate to meet Marge Schott, Lou Piniella, Joe Nuxhall, Barry Larkin, Ken Griffey, Mariano Duncan and many more of the Reds. I then decided to try the restaurant business and worked for Piccadilly Cafeteria where I completed a 7 month manager training program in Baton Rouge, LA. After some major policy changes for the company, I decided to go back to school full time to obtain a degree in Computer Science at Polk State College. While attending school I was an adjunct professor teaching Intro to Computers and Excel Spreadsheets I & II. After completing my degree, I was hired by a family owned trucking company based in Lakeland called Watkins Motor Lines in 1995. I started as a computer technician and progressed within the company to a Senior Network Analyst position. The company was one of the leading trucking companies in the US with 135 Service Centers across the country. In 2006 we were purchased by FedEx which I worked for until I retired from the company in 2014. Currently live in The Villages, Fl, a very active retirement community where your main source of transportation is a golf cart. I participate in softball, golf, pickle ball, shooting club and 2 Disney clubs. Will be celebrating our 44th Anniversary in October, have 1 child and 3 grandkids.
