Gary's Story
During high school you won't remember me from the football or baseball fields, but more for the music. Like most of us, I was just trying to get it done in the classroom and graduate. But I did play in a couple of bands (Shackles & Decades). We actually played at some school dances, at Hueneme, as well as other schools in and around Oxnard, including a Prom. After high school I joined the Army (like many of us).
I retired from the Army in 1989 after serving 21 yrs. My assignments included time in Vietnam, Germany, Hawaii, as well as several locations across the US. I served in the Infantry, Field Artillery, Air Defense Artillery and Aviation; and, served in positions including Infantry Squad Leader, Field Artillery Section Chief, Drill Instructor, Basic Training Unit Commander, Helicopter Pilot, Aviation Operations Officer; and, finished my career teaching Military Science at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
I currently live in Northern Virginia (DC area) with my Wife of almost 34 years. We actually ended up living in Las Vegas for over 2 years after I retired from the Military, then moved up to Idaho in 1992. We moved to...Expand for more
the DC area in 2005 on a job assignment with my company (Micron Technology, Inc. / Been with them since 1994). Since we still have a place in Idaho, we plan on moving back there when I retire again, hopefully in 4-5 years. We have four children and five grandchildren. Just about all of the family moved from California, except my Brother-in-Law, who lives in the Malibu area. All the rest of our immediate family lives in Idaho, Utah, Arizona and Indiana. I still ride motorcycles. I have managed to do a couple cross-country rides and several trips to Sturgis, South Dakota and Laughlin, Nevada from Idaho, as well as a few rides here on the East Coast, the highlight of which was Rolling Thunder in 2008. I am not much into playing music anymore, just listening (Rock & Blues). Although, when I do retire again, getting back into playing the guitar and keyboard would be an enjoyable hobby.
Notes: The 'Now' picture is me with my two oldest grandchildren at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2008; and, the 'Then' picture is me as a part-time Carnie in 1966 somewhere in Montana, I think (We played in several locations each summer - US and Canada).
