Gary's Story

Here's the update..... After all these years I retired from the same place that I worked at after graduation.... Same place different name. Started as Douglas Aircraft, then McDonnell Douglas and now it's Boeing. Can't believe it's been over 48 years at the same place. Oh, the jobs have changed over the years. I started in January 1967 as a machinist making parts. On and off I have worked on the flight line with the ground support equipment for basically all models from the DC-2 to the MD-11. The last 30 years I've had a desk job in planning, writing the work instructions for others on how to make parts. I've written the work instructions for others too make and assemble parts for the C-17 wings. I ended up on the final assembly line and paint and flight ramp operations. Not much left of the old Douglas Aircraft. Now we only build one aircraft, the C-17 here in Long Beach. It looks like the end of the C-17 line here in Long Beach at the end of 2015. Mary and I finally made it to retirement this year.. I spent a few years in the Army also. Being a machinist at Douglas, I opted to take an extra year beyond the two that I was ...Expand for more
drafted for and went to machinist school at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland. I ended up as an instructor at the school for a while, before being transferred to a helicopter gunship company at Ft. Riley Kansas. We all shipped off to Vietnam for a year. I eventually had 17 guys working for me in the maintenance of our UH-1B helicopters. After the Army I was back to work at McDonnell Douglas, (now Boeing) and basically have been here ever since. Four children, three daughters and one son, worked their way into my life.... Here's the update for 2020. It was six grand children, 2 girls and 2 boys and two new twin girls in 2016 that are just beautiful. My youngest daughter remarried and had a new grandson in March of 2020 to add to the family. Her oldest daughter had my first great grandson a month later. So the count is now 4 girls and 4 boys. All live locally so we keep in touch pretty much. All of them and their husbands/wives are into classic cars, motor cycles, boats, 4x4's, quads or dune buggies. Gee, I wonder how they have time for it all..... I can only squeeze in a ride on my motorcycle once in a while.
