Gary's Story

Life After graduation from Hirsch High School I attended Augustana College in Rock Island IL. I graduated in 1963 and for a short period I was a city planner. I then taught 6th grade in Markham IL starting in 1964. During that time I married the former Betsye Johnson. We had gone steady for 7 years prior to our marriage and have just celebrated 49 years of going steady and will celebrate 43 years of marriage this September(2007). While in Illinois we had 2 children. Kristin(1967) and Erik(1970). After teacing in public schools for 7 years I attended classes at Purdue University, Calumet campus, in Indiana. In 1971 I received my Master's degree. In the summer of 1971 we moved to West Lafayette IN so I could work on a Ph.D. which I completed in 1973. We stayed in West Lafayette for another year while Betsye received her nursing degree. In the summer of 1974 I was hired as assistant professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Wyoming in Laramie,WY. I taught there for 26 years and am now a retired Professor Emeritus living in Denver Colorado. Laramie is surrounded by widerness which we explored enthusiastically. I got into fishing, hunting, 4-wheeling, shooting, camping and hiking. My tenure at the University of Wyoming included teaching undergraduate and graduate classes in Educational Psychology, Human Growth and Development, Human Relations and Humanistic and Transpersonal Pschology. For a couple of years I served as Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies. My professional writing and presenting papers at regional and national conferences provided me with the opportunity to make good friends around the country. I have published or presented over 150 articles and papers and my work has appeared in several books. However, my best friends were always students of mine. I served as major professor for many Master's and Doctoral students. That became my favorite part of the job. I have had some health problems along the way. I had a heart at...Expand for more
tack in 1992 and open heart surgery in 1995. Betsye moved to Denver in 1992. Eighteen years of almost perpetual winter was all she could take. We rented an apartment in Denver and for the next 8 years I commuted between Denver and Laramie once a week(260 miles round trip). I kept an apartment in Laramie and worked out a schedule where I would go to Laramie Monday and return to Denver on Wednesday. It was a long 8 years and I finally retired in 2000 when I was eligible for full benefits. I was 59 years old. Since living in Denver I had jobs which included being an usher at Colorado Rockies baseball games, a bookseller at the Tattered Cover Bookstore and finally as a sales associate at Fascinations(an adult emporium). I no longer work and spend my time reading, playing on the computer and walking. Betsye and I love to travel and have visited England twice, Greece and Crete, Sweden, St. Petersburg, Russia, Copenhagen, Denmark, China and this May we are heading off to Italy for 2 weeks. I have visited 46 states missing NC, ND, AK and HI. I plan to visit these before I run out of time. I am in moderately good health now, but one never knows how long one has left. I can't believe (as I'll bet most of you can't) how I got so old so fast. The time flies by! I have been associated with the counterculture since the 1960s and have experienced altered states of consciousness which can affect time but never did it go at its present rate! I have enjoyed my life and accomplished far more than I ever thought I would and will continue to enjoy! I am politically quite liberal and a political junkie so am following the 2008 elections closely. Something must be done to get the country back together. Enough about that. I have joined Classmates to hopefully find old friends and acquaintances with whom I have not communicated with in years and hopefully start some dialogues. I look forward to this happening and to all who read this I wish you Peace, Love and Joy! Sincerely, Gary
