Gary's Story

I went to DeVeaux grade school - kindergarten thru 8th grade. It looked as though I'd be going to Start High School, like my sister, but then my parents were forced to move and I ended up in a different school district and went to DeVilbiss High School and then the University of Toledo Community College. I worked at SS Kresge in Westgate Shopping Center at Central and Secor while in high school and then a good friend, Mark Macey, helped me to get a job with Owens-Illinois in their data center. I worked at O-I for nealy 15 years and then left to go to work for Blue Cross on Sylvania Ave where I stayed until Blue Cross merged with a plan in Cleveland and the job I was doing moved there. The cost of living was higher in Cleveland and Blue Cross wasn't willing to pay me any more so I looked for a job elsewhere. There were no computer jobs in Toledo so I looked for warmer weather out of state and landed in Phoenix, Arizona. The Arizona Bank (TAB) had just merged with Security Pacific and everybody quit when it looked as though they'd be shutting down their data center and relocating it. Nothing was definite so I took the chance and moved my wife Deb and 2 sons (Robbie 5 and Jamie 3) to Phoenix. We were in Phoenix less than 6 months when they made it official that the data center was being moved so I took a job with a company called Avnet. Avnet was rather smal...Expand for more
l at the time but is now one of the major employers in Phoenix. I worked there for 5 years before they let me go. I took a short contracting job at IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY. Within a month I landed a job back in Phoenix, where my family was still living, with Samaritan Health which was later renamed to Banner Health where I have worked for the last 15 years. All through grade school I was attracted to many girls but the names that still stick in my mind are Becky, Marcia, Pam and Patty. When I was working at O-I, I finally got up the nerve to ask out Becky who was only interested in knowing how much I was making. I was doing OK - I had my own apartment, a new car (small) and a Honda 750cc motorcycle - I told her I was making enough that I wanted to call and ask her out - she wasn't interested. While at O-I, I was attracted to several of the beautiful ladies who worked there and managed to date a few - some of which I was sure I was going to marry until fate intervened. The woman who had the biggest impact on my life was a kyepuncher named Leslie. Even though it took 20 years and 1800 miles, she is now my wife. Prior to us finally getting together we both had lives with other people. My other person was Deb - the mother of my children... That's about all there is - just working and praying that Social Security will be around so I can retire some day...
