Military
Funny thing is I often tell people that I speak 10 or 11 languages, which is true. I just don't speak them fluently. I speak Korean, Philipino, German, Hawaiian, Farsi, English, French, Spanish, Guamanian, Samoan, Japanese, etc. Most of this experience came from a 20 year career in the Army. I was a Personnel and Administration Specialist. I worked at all levels in the Army, from Department of the Army level to company level. I worked on President Theodore Roosevelt's Medal of Honor, and several awards from the movie "We Were Soldiers Once and Young." I worked on The African American Medal of Honor Upgrade Project and the Asian American Medal of Honor Upgrade Project. Another high visibility project was the combat conversion awards to Soldier's Medals for two of the three heroes of the My Lai Massacre. While working in this position I crafted and wrote correspondence for the President of the United States, Vice President, Secretary of Defense and other execu...Expand for more
tive level leaders. Additionally, I worked in fielding some of the most advanced personnel technology systems at the time, and I made the Rank of First Sergeant. I was the Army's Project Manager for the fielding of the current ID card proto-type which was later accepted by all of the armed services. So my work is in the pockets of all the US Service Men and Women in the world.
I should be a Sergeant Major or a Command Sergeant Major now, but instead, I opted to put my family first so I retired at 20 years. I served twice in Hawaii, twice in Korea, twice in Indianapolis, once at Fort Knox, and once in Virginia. I was deployed to Haiti in 1995 and was on alert for Desert shield / Desert Storm. I still remember the call from Bob Munoz, now Sergeant Major Retired. Bob was in Ryahd, Saudi Arabia and called Friday evening just before the start of the Air War. "Soots, be prepared to move in 72 hours."; "Bob, I'm ready, I've been ready since August." "Soots, be prepared to move in 72 hours, OUT." 72 hours came and went, and I stayed in Indianapolis and guarded the Water Wells in Lawrence, Indiana.
