Gary's Story

Life omg...I just rejoined, and found emails from 2010 I didn't answer!! I'm sooo SORRY!! Now I can't figure out how to do it. Yikes! So many times I've paused in a situation or place, and felt awed that I was there. Some of the landmark things I've experienced are shared by most of us, like the birth of a child. I'm happy to report four grown children, all great friends and quality people. I will always strive to improve any small portion of the world I can touch, to leave it a little better for them (and you). My career was a roller coaster ride of experiences. It has shown me so much about people, both filling and emptying my heart at times in the process. It has encouraged me to stay healthy, and keep out of most trouble (except that which it delivered). It has helped me to see many amazing sunrises and beautiful starry nights I would have missed if I had chosen a different job. It has tasked me with both taking and saving lives, causing me to feel the deep sadness and elation both experiences bring. I've won awards, and survived ridicule, sometimes during the same time period. I've seen some celebrities and Politicians at their worst (don't ask, I'm like a Priest), and some "never will be anybodies" at their very best, showing superb courage and selflessness in extremely trying times. I've learned that we are all just people, mostly good, all flawed. I've seen the destructive power of nature, crawling into buildings it smashed into kindling, and had the windows in my car blown out by superheated air, escaping with embers burning the seat between my legs. I've negotiated multi-kilo drug deals, made and detonated truck bombs, breakfasted with a guy knowing he was wanted for a drug hit murder (which ended in a vicious fight). Some amusing highlights would be sneaking into Wounded Knee, South Dakota in 1974 during the last Indian uprising in history (and soon getting arrested by the US Marshal's. I work under contract with them now. Go figure..), living with Ringo Starr as a body guard for 3 months just after John Lennon was killed (soon becoming sort of a nanny to his fiance's kids), and receiving personal thanks from Mr. Reagan after stopping a man known to be bent on assassinating him (when the ma...Expand for more
n stopped off at Bob Dylan's house in Malibu to offer Dylan the job once Reagan was "removed from office"). I spent the coldest night of my life alone in the mountains with the body of 6 year old murder victim "Miguel" under the wide open star filled sky, and have ever since pondered how a God that "sees every hair that falls from your head" must have watched what happened to him, doing nothing. This case has since been solved! In my most frightened moment, just before dawn I sat rock still on the ground while a man had a gun pointed at my back from 2 feet away, feeling exactly where the bullet would go through my body, and how much it would hurt. But the bullet never came, because thank God the cammo worked, and he just sniffed and walked away, deciding I was probably a rock or a bush. My job has been about serving others, so the things I'm proudest of are the little things that nobody knows about, and never will. Although all in all it has been deeply satisfying, sometimes it felt like I was on a 30 year tour of problems I had to witness but couldn't fix, usually because I was too late, sometimes because I was too stupid, or too weak. However, I continue to find deep satisfaction in life, friends and family, and prefer to live simply. My only three regrets are that the religious upbringing from my early years disallowed me to seek higher education (I picked it up piecemeal anyway, and my kids are getting the chance), that although I have rythym, a voice, and love music, I never learned to dance, and that although at times I've glimpsed her, I have never found the love of my life... Sorry if you think this bio is verbose or has "TMI"... I guess I just felt like spilling my guts this morning.. School I was probably the guy few remember, since I was encouraged to keep out of everything. I had secret crushes on Denise Leger, and a dark haired girl named "Renee" who had a locker near mine upstairs. They were both quiet types too. Workplace I work outdoors, mostly. Military Trained with Seal Team 6, Army 3rd Special Operations Group, the 10th Mountain Division (mountain warfare school, summer edition). Explosives training from Army EOD. All really good people. However, I've never been in the military..
