Gary's Story
Don Lugo from 1978 to 1982 was a school going through a lot of change. The library, Gym and pool were all under construction during my freshman year and opened during my sophomore year. We never had a cafeteria, only a large patio covering, so we sat on the ground in the walkway that separated the original part of the school from the new sections. Luckily Mr. Thomas always ate lunch in his classroom and allowed his students to do the same, so that is where I lunched in my sophomore & junior years. Senior year was great because we had open campus for lunch and I had a car so I always went off campus. Luckily I was in student government and the secretary would always give me a pass when I was late to my sixth period class (which was at least twice a week). I enjoyed being the Associated Student Government Business Manager, it defiantly had its privileges. Having ASB as the last class of the day meant there was always something fun to do and we could go anywhere we wanted. The advisors, Barbara Smith and Connie Weeks where pretty cool. days but was no big deal back then.
I attended UC Irvine for two years but was not a focused student. Living in Newport Beach was too fun and distracting. I left school and worked for six years at various jobs, including as a department manager for Nordstroms. Eventually I realized that I needed to get a degree to get a good job. I had never officially withdrawn from UC Irvine so a reenrolled and got a BA in History. I was a much better student when I went back even though I was working full time one graveyard shift and going to school during the day.
Since graduating college I have had some great jobs and worked with some really great people (an a few bad ones). Currently I am self-employed working in insurance sales.
I have moved between Chino and Orange County many times in the last 30 years. I moved back to Chino four years ago to assist my sister with looking after my mother who is in her 90âÂÂs. Chino is ok but I preferred living in Orange County next to the Irvine Regional Park and the Peters Canyon Nature Preserve. I enjoyed the open spaces and hiking trails being so close by.
