Gary's Story

Life Time for another "new, new" update (2/20/10)!!!! My Daughter (Update) Jessica is now finishing her second term of her second senior year at Shepherd University in West Virginia. She continues to do extraordinarily well. She is still way too busy. She continues to be a very caring, loving person who is always thinking of the other person. My Girlfriend (Update) Condo living for Karen and I has been great. It's still as beautiful a place as ever. It's still very private, quiet and relaxing. We are very active and are on the go all the time. My Pets (Update) Well, our geriatric cats China and Webster both passed away last year. That was really hard on both of us. They had been a big part of our lives for so many years. But Webster was 17 and China was 19 when they died, so they both had very long lives. We now have two adolescent cats: Mr. Muldoon, a big orange tabby, and Wilma, a young gray and black striped tabby. They are full of life and sometimes a hand full, but we couldn't be happier. My Job (Update) Nothing has changed here. I still have my two jobs (though that's up for debate...if you count the music I write then it's three jobs). My full-time job is doing activity therapy with the elderly at a retirement complex called Eastcastle Place here in Milwaukee. I do a variety of different recreational activities with many of the residents. They're a wonderful group of people and are my extended family. I'm also the editor-in-chief of the monthly resident newsletter. I also have a part-time job as the Choir Director for the Bay View United Methodist Church, directing the Faith Singers Choir. My Dad Dad passed away in August of 2008. That was a very sad time for me. In fact,...Expand for more
when I got the news over the phone I was doing a group with residents while at work. All I could do was take it in and go on. We had a wonderful service for him, lots of family were around, including my daughter. Dad had such a hard time since Mom died a few years back. He is in a much better place now. Politics (OK this is old...I will update this later) OK, this is an area none of you would have thought I'd be into, but I am. A lot has happened to change my way of thinking. I am much more outspoken regarding our country and the world in general. After 9/11, I began reading a lot of material specifically on how the U.S. became involved with the Middle East over the years, going all the way back to when Britain controlled a lot of the oil production in Iraq/Iran at the beginning of the 20th century. It seemed simple at the time as to who was to blame for what happened on 9/11. My thinking changed when I heard President Bush speaking out against Iraq and the plan of going to war there. Everything I have read from Against All Enemies by Richard Clark to The Price of Loyalty & The Education of Paul O'Neill (to name a few) forced me to open my eyes and stop being so passe regarding politics. I'm very concerned for what kind of future my daughter will inherit. Bottom line for me is this war is wrong (glad I am no longer in the minority), this country is deeply divided (more so than I can remember), we are cutting programs for people who can ill afford it (ask some of the African-Americans I work with here in Milwaukee), over 47 million people in the U.S. have no health insurance (we're talking kids!!!), and the government is snooping in on my email and phone calls! That's why I'm involved!
