expulsion of ethnic Germans from the formerly Nazi-controlled Sudetenland borderland section of Czechoslovakia.
As a displaced person in Snoqualmish, WA (Everett), Peter struggles to become part of the mainstream student body because of the complete difference in background and his goal of returning to his Czechoslovakian home to search for his parents. Trudi, a childhood friend. becomes his partner in realizing his life-long objective.
The story climaxes with the ingenious and suspenseful escape from Czechoslovakia for Peter and Trudi by one method and for Trudi's mother by another.
