Gary's Story

While in high school I played football, basketball, and ran track. I was active in my church and worked during the summer with my dad's upholstery business and home remodeling business. He taught me many useful skills that have come in handy over the year. I graduated from WSU in 1976, moved to Lubbock, TX at attend Sunset International Bible Institute. Finished in July, 1978 and moved to Tuscaloosa, AL to work with a church there as minister to college age students. I got married after a year to Sue, my wife of 35+ years after a year (I met her while at Sunset). In 1981 we moved back to Lubbock to work with the church that ran the seminary in the same capacity. After 3 years, I went back to school at Texas Tech to continue the Master's degree work I began in Alabama. I completed a Master's in 1986 and a doctorate in 1989 in family studies. During that time both of our sons were born. I taught child and family development at Truman State University in Kirksville, MO (1 year) and at the University of Akron (3 years) before moving back to Texas to try my hand family counseling. After 3 years I started teaching high school math and that's what I've been doing since. I have also coached boys or girls basketball for the majority of that time. I retired from public school teaching last Spring and we moved back to Lubbock from Midland...Expand for more
, TX where both of our sons attended high school. They both have degrees from Texas Tech. The oldest never left Lubbock but married his high school sweetheart. Both are school teachers and my son followed in my footsteps as a basketball coach. He is now athletic director, head girls basketball coach and history department chair at a small private school. He has hired me to coach Junior High boys basketball. I am also teaching math at another private school in Lubbock. My younger son just got married to a school teacher, but he is a project engineer for one of the largest construction companies in the country. He works out of their Dallas office. My oldest son and daughter-in-law have one granddaughter and 2 grandsons. My life has been blessed far beyond what I deserve. Jesus Christ has been the guiding force in my life and I owe everything I have to Him. I am thankful for the legacy of faith passed on to me by my parents and am grateful that He granted me the grace to have that faith become my own. I trust God, His Son, and His Holy Spirit with my existence here on earth and my eternal destination. If you don't know Him, I invite you to consider His message of love, hope, and faith. I suggest that you start with the Gospel of John. I will be more than happy to discuss these matters with anyone who has questions. God bless.
