Deanna's Story
Life
I have spend most of my professional life working in humanitarian work, from teaching English as a Second Language at a YWCA to working with the developmentally disabled. I taught swimming through college and I guess I will teach it off and on til I'm eighty! (Never mind I was the slowest on the Fohi team, but that's another story!) I dabbled in the legal field for a while, thinking I'd like to be a paralegal, but I discovered I'd much prefer to work directly with people on personal issues. I also taught adaptive aquatics to people with disabilities and from there I became an advocate to help people with disabilities live on their own in the community (I worked for United Cerebral Palsy in Santa Barbara). I am also now proficient in American Sign Language and though I'm only hearing-impaired, I am proud to be able to communicate with the deaf community and thus connected with another part of myself. I moved back to the Bay area where I had gone to college to marry a Dutch man I'd dated for many years, we did the deed last fall. We were married outside in the Santa Cruz forest in which me wearing a Renaissance style wedding dress and with my family and friends in full attendance. When the sun shone down on us during our vows it reaffirmed it was meant to be! I am happily married, in Nevada now where my husband works as an...Expand for more
IT manager. We enjoy hiking, swimming and playing with our new lab mix pup. It's a late start but kids may be in the future. I am now pursuing writing in the area of nutrition and will soon post a website in that area. Hope to hear from some of you!
School
The High School Years were hard for me as I went to a new high school each of the four years! But Fohi was the best, as I finally got a bit more involved and the teachers were great. One teacher actually paid me to help "edit" her English essays so that I'd have the money to take lifesaving and the Water Safety Instructor course in my senior year, it meant a lot to me that she believed in me, I wish I remembered her name. I lived for choir, being on the school newspaper (even though the art class made fun of my editorial cartoons! Hey at least I stuck my neck out) I would love to know how Mrs. Timmons (sp?), from school newspaper and Jerry Dison (Advanced Sr. English) where they are now. My best friends in high school were Christine Riviera and Stephanie Newton, we rarely hung out at school but they were my buds. Haven't spoken to them in years! I'm embarrassed of my performance on the swim team but I'd just started in the Sr. year! But I found out I'm a great swim teacher...Another cool friend in high school was Anna Kitty Ekstam, the exchange student from Finland.
