Gayle's Story

Life Whooo-- that's a lot to sum up in 4000 characters. Graduated from USF in 1972 after quitting school for a couple of years; took a big European trip with Jeri Liles; wound up in Alabama, where I met my newspaper reporter-husband, Mike. In 1978 we moved to Madison, Wisconsin, and then ended up in the metro Washington area in 1988. Life is a series of endless surprises-- the great ones that make you smile for days, and the other kind that kick you in the head-- but I'd have to say that, in all, it has been a wondrous adventure. This year, I left my editorial job of 25 years and I'm now working with an amazing new friend, booking and managing artists for national tours. My youngest child just started college this year; my oldest followed his mom's footsteps and dropped out last year to play the saxophone all day. I never miss a reunion because it's great to reconnect with all the people who share so many of the same memories-- and who really know how to have a good time. School Hillsborough was a haven during a really tumultuous and difficult couple of years in my life. All my wonderful friends made it feel like home, even though I didn't arrive until my junior year. Favorite memories include giving rides to and from school to Linda, Sandy, Kathy in my seriously-underpowered '57 Renault. It wouldn't even climb the hill leaving the parking lot with all of us in it, so someone always had to get out and walk and meet the rest of us at the top of the hill. Also, dances after the football games on the patio (doing the Freddie; taking a slow dance with Eddie Peeler to the Everly Brothers' "Let it Be Me;" being careful not to step on the "H!" ) Slumber parties at Peggy Rocha's... one wild party at Gail Nash's house when we were all getting freaky to James Brown... serving with K...Expand for more
athy B. as one of the campaign managers for Barb's run for class treasurer, and painting 2,000 "crickets" that we gave away in school, much to the principal's displeasure. Going to the Causeway with Danny on those hot summer days. (Danny was pretty hot, himself.) Singing in the a cappella choir with some really talented vocalists, who went on to bigger musical things. Selling Kiwanette candy (well, eating most of it and having to buy what I ate.) My controversial cheerleading tryout (and then getting to be a cheerleader for a day marching in the Gasparilla parade in Ybor City-- and losing a toenail because my shoes were too tight.) It's all good. In later years, I've told many friends how lucky I was to go to school with such a great bunch of people, remarkably clique-free and very accepting, at least to me. Thanks, y'all. College USF-- what can I say? Two years there, two years out of school, two years back. My first two years were sorority-driven, living in the dorms, not paying as much attention to my education as I should have. My last two years I lived off campus, worked as a student assistant in the chemistry department, really put some energy into my classwork, and had some fabulous professors-- in particular Dr. Jurgensen and Jim Palmer. 1970-1972 was a completely different world on campus than 1966-68, and not just for me. It was a lucky accident that I had the opportunity to experience both worlds. Workplace 1973-1976: Several "starter" jobs that I'd rather not talk about 1976-1978: Anniston Council on the Arts and Humanities - Executive Director 1978-2002: Association of Performing Arts Presenters, Washington, DC - Director of Publications, Editor of Inside Arts magazine 2002-present: Self-employed - contractor for editorial services in the performing arts sector
