Gayle Portugal:

CLASS OF 1964
Lafayette, CA

Gayle's Story

Upon graduating from Acalanes, I went to Cal Poly (SLO). I married in 1967. I completed my BA from UCRiverside in 1973 and my MA from Arizona State University in 1985. I divorced in 1974, never remarried and never did have any kids. (I guess once was enough!) In 1979 I relocated to Phoenix AZ. I taught at a private post-secondary school until I decided to go back to school for my MA. When I went back to get my masters, I started teaching at ASU as a TA, teaching ENG 101 and 102. When I completed that degree in 1985 I remained at ASU as a lecturer, teaching ENG 301 full time. One summer I went to China on a student tour and was offered a job teaching at Beijing Foreign Studies University. I accepted. Within one month I had relocated to China. I had several great experiences in China. I also taught at the Institute of International Relations in Beijing and was the first foreigner to be invited to work with the government-run (and repressed!) People's Education Press, where I coauthored and edited several school textbooks for China's school children, almost all of whom have some exposure to English at some point or another. My last year in China I worked as a writer/editor for China Radio International and also did some English-languag...Expand for more
e broadcasting. Then I went over to China Central Television where I was asked to host an international television broadcast called "China Through Foreigner's Eyes." I traveled all over China, introducing China to the outside world, which knew little about China at that time. In the early 1990's China had just made it's first commitment to the Open Door Policy, and we worked hard at creating a positive image for the country and disspell some misconceptions. I had the time of my life!! I came back to the US in 1996 and decided I'd better grow up and make plans for my Medicare years. I sacrificed a solid 8 years of my time teaching high school level ESL, mostly for the AZ State Pension Plan! Most of my students were great, but high school is a zoo. I also taught part-time at Glendale Community College and now work part-time at Phoenix College. College-level teaching suits me best. I can require the students to be accountable and actually get away with it! No, it is NOT 13th and 14th grade! This doesn't set well with a good many of the students, but accountability is an important part of education, or at least it should be. I enjoy my work and my home, my dog, my cat, and my bird. One important lesson I have learned--Keep it simple.
