Gene's Story

I'm from Hammond, Indiana, happy in a long-time relationship with Pauline Cox (HHS '60). Graduated from Hammond High School in 1963. I then had a lot of fun playing football and pole vaulting at Missouri Valley College, majoring in communications/journalism. Got a BA that I never really used. Worked for over 25 years successfully in retail management. Started at a small hockey/sporting goods store in South Holland, moved to Robert Hall clothing (remember them?) then Radio Shack, then Pacific Stereo, Meade Video in Munster, followed by Playback, Fedder's electronics, and Zayres. I finally landed at Marshall Fields in River Oaks. If you take a look at that list you'll notice they're all out of business, bought out, or in bankruptcy. Oh, what good luck charm am I. After 8 years at Marshall Fields I was "burned out" by the grind and the long hours.. I then spent 10 years as a mortgage broker in Highland, IN (loved those "Banker's Hours" as compared to retail.) I left the mortgage business when I saw the signs of the sub-prime crash on the horizon. Glad I did. Finished my working days as an account rep for LabCorp, a prominent nationwide medical lab. Since I was working out of Elmhurst, and later Itaska, most of my accounts were in DuPage County, Il.. Great area with very nice people. Many or the other reps had to work in the "City" with all that entails.. I was lucky! Retired in Oct 2015. . Interests and hobbies include Home Theater, audio speaker building, building furniture and other misc. woodworking projects, along with occasional golf and fishing when I get the chance....Expand for more
I'm still strumming on my acoustic guitar collection even though I know I'll never really be very good. Yeah, I'm sadly still playing '60s folk music, with a little Beatles and Byrds thrown in. Lately, I spent about a year restoring and adding custom touches to an old 1985 Shadow VT1100 motorcycle. It's the most powerful and quickest V-Twin Shadow cruiser Honda ever made. Smokes most HDs when challenged. I'm very pleased with how it turned out. Time to Ride! I fondly remember many of my classmates from 1963 - - - hardly see any of 'youse guys" anymore since I might be the only grad who still lives in Hammond! Looking forward to spending a lot more time at my Ozark Mountain retreat in NW Arkansas (roomy 1970s house, 3 car garage, 4 outbuildings, on 10 acres of forested mountainside). Thanks Dad! Nearest neighbor is a half mile down the mountain. I can play my tunes LOUD when I want. Great bass fishing at nearby Bull Shoals lake, and float trips/canoeing and trout fishing in the Buffalo river. I'm very, very proud of my son Neal, who's one of the finest multi-genre guitarists in the Midwest. That kid has toured Africa, Australia, and Europe several times, and even played Carnegie Hall 3 times as guitarist for Blue Note jazz recording artist Patricia Barber. Check out: nealalger.com. I'd like to hear from any of my fellow 1963 grads. Thanks to my Irving Jr, High friend Marty Fauber (track & cross-country star) and HHS bud Randy Boris for responding immediately to my first post. Hey, why aren't there any of the 1963 foxy girls visiting my profile? Oh well, some things never change.
