Gene's Story

This was written for the last reunion. See additions below We have been living in Farmington River Valley in CT since 1990. Kids, cats, dog, and a variety of local animals including too many bears. For work I develop shopping centers from the ground up which is a slow and slower process. Its much more difficult today than 6 months ago. Danielle is at UVM and Ben the 17 year old is at Loomis. In free time I follow Ben's sports. He is a ranked ski racer so winter is very busy. He is on the slopes a part of every day from mid-December through early March. Just think about dry gear and clean ski socks every day....(I skied with him or at races about 40 times this winter.)Otherwise, house work, yard work, and work work make up most of the waking hours. My avocation is politics. We fundraise for our congressman and one of the CT senators. Its always fun to chat with the politicos, the majority of whom are very average folks. The work week puts me on the road to our developments every week to Maine, NH, VT, or RI projects. A house in Wells Beach helps answer the overnights. Visits back to Latham are fun but usually parent related. We walk at SHS sometimes and its always a memory lane event. Working lots harder and longer than I thought I would be. I miss the old gang from Shaker although I do see Bob Collins often and try to stay in touch with several buds. Looking forward to the reunion. NEW: Looking forward...Expand for more
to the reunion. So we moved north two miles on the same ridge in Simsbury. Danielle after a lot of years at UVM is a nurse practitioner and is a partner in a practice in Williston, Vermont. Her Army captain husband left the Army for the Guard and just returned from a year at helicopter school. Ben is running the iSun Energy office in Burlington, VT. He did take nine months off to visit and rock climb in the national parks. Marilyn teaches at a Montessori school in the north end of Hartford, probably finishing this year. I am working less but still tend to our properties in Maine and Rhode Island. I am off the seminar/speaking merry go-round although I do policy wonk from time to time. There might be a move to Lake Champlain next year. No grand kids yet. Both parents have past away and the Latham house took a year to clean out, market, and sell. That was a trip down memory lane. Both parents lived into their 90s but their last years were difficult. I think I was there weekly for about five years and was on a first name basis with a lot of doctors and caretakers. Charles DeGaulle used to speak of the "Shipwreck of old age." I got back on the slopes after a hiatus. We have managed to reunite with Charlie and Naomi. We see the Collins family who live not far from the Wells house. I chat with Rick Downer often. They all are coming to the reunion. Sorry about not updating this a tad sooner. On to the reunion !!
