Gene's Story
I had the honor to care for both of my parents for their last five years. I was able to grant them their wish to live out their lives at home. Dad passed away at home in September 2017, and Mom joined him in heaven in November 2017.
Our whole family was together to bid them farewell on their last day here on earth.
Mom and Dad lived for one another. It brought me a lot of joy to see them kissing and exchanging
I Love You's to the very end.
A few people had advised me never to take care of my parents, that is too emotionally difficult to see them decline in health. I experienced it differently. I looked at it as love the person and treat the illness. I'm not saying it was easy. There were some very stressful times, because they found it difficult to accept they could no longer do many of the things they used to be able to do. I learned to not do for them anything thing they could do for themselves, even if they had to struggle sometimes to do it. They took pride in being able to do what they could. I was there to assist them when they asked for help and to watch out for their safety.
I also learned how important it is to take care of yourself first, so you are emotionally there for them whenever you ar...Expand for more
e with them. The gym was my place to unwind and let go of my stress. They appreciated having that couple of hours to themselves. They promised me they wouldn't take unnecessary risks while I was gone. Toward the end, they did need someone always there, so my older sister, Linda, would come over a few days a week so that I could get out. During the last year, we had a caregiver come for the 'graveyard shift' so that I could get some good sleep.
George Chimiklis was my rock during that last year.
I shall forever be grateful for him being there for me.
Having cared for them, I looked at their passing as God granting them peace. A friend gave me a treasured Christmas present. (We are both part of a FB group called Stockton Rocks, where people decoratively paint rocks and hide them for others to find, a fun activity for both parents and kids.)
She had a rock painted for me that was done from a photo, when Mom and Dad were dancing together. It is inscribed "Wally and Joan Dancing in Heaven, Eternal Dance Partners".
I enjoy seeing it every day. It reminds me of their love for one another, and that they are at peace, together. I feel blessed to have had the privilege of caring for them to their last breaths.
