Eugene's Story

Life 1969-1973 I was on various search & rescue (SAR) stations and vessels in the U.S. Coast Guard. I was on an ice-breaking tug boat when I met my wife (Pat) in Detroit. We have been married since Oct 22, 1971. From 1973 to 1975, I drove tractor trailer out of Knoxville and lived in Inskip and Maynardville. My son, Geoff was born in 1974 while we lived in Maynardville. In 1976, I joined the U.S. Army. My daughter, Jaime, was born in 1977 in Ft Stewart, GA. I had assignments in Europe, (Germany twice and Belgium once) and Georgia (Ft Gordon twice and Ft Stewart once). The last assignment I got before military retirement was in Northern Virginia, where I now live. (I miss living in Tennessee!) I retired from the Army in 1992 and worked at Canon USA, Inc as PC Support Specialist and Assistant Novell LAN Administrator for 12 years. After Canon (got laid off due to down-sizing), I worked for 2-1/2 years as a contractor at Ft Belvoir, VA as a Desktop Engineer/Team Lead. I am now a Government civilian employee and am an IT Specialist for the Fort Belvoir Directorate of Information Management. I am supporting close to 250 users in my organization and am a a part of the technician staff that supports another 4,000+ users on Ft Belvoir. I plan to retire somewhere between 2011 and 2013. I have 4 grandchildren. ILOVED my 2002 Honda GOLDWING, put 97,000 miles on it, sold it and got a 2009 GOLDWING! Rides of note from our home in Virginia are New England, Ontario and Michigan in 2002, Texas in 2003 and New England and Nova Scotia in 2004. (We pull a cargo trailer behind the Goldwing on these type of trips.) We do make an annual trip to Rockport, Massachusetts each year on the Wing. (We love it up there...and the seafood is great!) We bought some lakeside property on Watts Bar Lake in Spring City, TN and are building our retirement home. We should be moving in November 2011! School I graduated from Central High School (upon completion of Summer School) in August of 1969...even though the diploma says "June". College I attended Georgia Military College for a short time (a few semesters) while assigned at Ft. Gordon, GA. I do regret that I never took the time to finish a degree. I was ...Expand for more
near many colleges and could have done so. I only needed about 5 credit hours for an Associates Degree. Workplace When I left the Coast Guard in 1973, I went to school to learn to drive a tractor trailer. I drove over-the-road for about 2 years. I then went back into the military, this time in the Army. Upon retirement from the Army, I went to work for Canon USA, Inc in August 1992 as an Order Administrator until a position opened up for PC Support. In August 1995, I got a position in Systems Support as a PC Support Specialist and enjoyed working with that department until getting laid off at the end of March 2005. I currently hold certifications for Comptia A+ and Novell Certified Netware Administrator for versions 4.11 and 5.1. In July 2005, I got a new job at Ft Belvoir, VA as a contractor Desktop Engineer. In August 2006, I was appointed as the Lead Desktop Technician over 9 other techs. On December 10, 2007, I became a government civilian worker. I am now the IT Specialist for the Fort Belvoir-Directorate of Information Management. I am supporting and tracking all IT equipment, maintenance and use of over 300 computers and peripherals. I plan to retire sometime between 2011 and 2013. Military I entered the U.S. Coast Guard in September 1969. After boot camp in Alameda, CA, I was stationed on a buoy tender in Ogdensburg, NY. I was there for about 5 months, then went to Commissaryman's School (cook school). I got assigned to Buffalo, NY as my first assignment from cook school. I then was assigned to an icebreaking tug boat based out of Buffalo. When I got married, I moved to an assignment in Rochester, NY on a search and rescue station. From there, I transferred to my last assignment in Milwaukee on an ocean-going icebreaker. I got out of the Coast Guard in June of 1973. I entered the U.S. Army in 1976 and had training in data telecommunications. I was stationed in Ft Stewart, Ft Gordon (twice), Germany (twice totalling 7 years) and Belgium for 2 years. Most of my schooling in the Army was specialized schools and leadership schools and academies. After my last assignment at the US Army Strategic Defense Command in Arlington, VA, I retired from the Army on June 30, 1992.
