Gene's Story

I spend my life these days fighting for my son, Sam McGinnis who was shot twice at work in 2008 during a robbery at CVS in Tampa Florida where we live. Yesterday, Sunday, August 7th the St Petersburg Times did a great front page story on him and the troubles he has with CVS not wanting to help him as they are the only ones that can under current workers compensation laws. Since classmates does not allow links to be inserted, if you search on the St Petersburg Times for Sam McGinnis, they did a great job! Best to all, Gene McGinnis It's amazing what cares we thought were so important in high school and how small issues then we thought would change out lives or we would just die! The last time I wrote, I was only looking for support to help my son in any capacity here in Florida, (not knowing who may live here besides my family). We had a real success story this past summer, as many may have read my earlier report about my son's shooting at work and the opposition we had from the political system of Florida to change in providing better doctors, (it was a mess). My son had better health insurance than 95% of any other American, but was unable to use it because he was shot at work. He was only allowed to use state supplied doctors that CVS could change at any time. In the past five years I have taken the Speaker of the House to the Senate Building in Tallahassee before the Ethics Committee for personal gain over this law. Earlier this year, we thought we were plain doomed. My son was still in a wheelchair and suffered from the nerve pain inflicted from the barrel of a 9mm pistol. CVS hired a doctor to testify that my son Sam could walk and didn't need a wheelchair. My son Sam was ready to end his life as he was ...Expand for more
removed from the workers comp system and was now on Medicare which we applied for a few years before. Little did we know, Sam was now off of workers comp and able to see the doctor of choice through Medicare. We chose a doctor who had finished his residency at Johns Hopkins and working in the Tampa Bay area. After 3 visits and 4.5 years later after the shooting, a nerve block was performed and for the first time Sam could stand with a lot of help! He scared me 15 seconds after the nerve block done in the doctors office as he passed out, he went to sleep for the first time in years without pain. It took weeks, but Sam learned to use his legs again and walk without a cane. I've worked to change law for the past five years to allow those catastrophically injured to have a doctor of choice. Few people are catastrophically injured at work, but those that are need help, not be forced to take their lives. I had so much wool over my eyes when it came to politics, I wish I didn't know what I know now. I supported Amanda Murphy here in Florida in a special election a short time ago to be my House Representative in Florida. Amanda Murphy is taking the law which I pushed for to the House floor this next session to become SamsLaw. A law which I've taken every ounce of my upbringing to ensure that no other catastrophically injured person in the state of Florida will have to suffer through again, (that of course means police officers and fire fighters). I'm still proud to say I'm from West Virginia, as that is where I got my ability to push this thing for so many years. I thank God for pushing the law makers in Florida aside to make this issue for my son, his hand that gave him life again! Sincerely, Paul E "Gene" McGinnis
