Gene's Story

Life Right after graduation, I tried the army but that didn't work out. I dated a few times. In 1985 I met the first woman I almost married but that didn't work out. I did various odd jobs. Worked for Domino's the first time from '88-89. In summer of 1988 I met the second woman I almost married. She was a widow and had even saved her husband's wedding ring and in like a "Cinderella" number, she tried it on my finger and it fit perfectly. But that ultimately didn't work out either and I returned her ring. In '93 I met the third woman I almost married but was saved from making what would have been the biggest mistake of my life by, of all things, lightning striking a tree near us. That changed both our minds! Lost a close cousin to suicide in '91. After more odd jobs, started Macon Colleged in early '92. After 5 years, I fizzled out, lost my financial aid and then my brother to a heart attack and I left Macon College. Got a job at Economy Tire in '97 but an injury forced me out of that job after only 3 months. Went back to Domino's in '98 and I've been back with them ever since. I am now the chief driver at the Forsyth Rd. store in Macon and frankly I love my work. In 2004 I was injured in a traffic accident. My jaw was smashed and some teeth were busted out. Although surgery repaired my shattered jaw, the missing teeth are still missing, I'm afraid, and I must live with this rather embarrassing mutilation until I can afford some dental insurance. Granted, my story is not the most successful in the world but it could have b...Expand for more
een worse. All the awful things life has hit me with could have turned my life in a different direction and destroyed me but didn't. I think some of us are called to go down a different kind of path where the test lies not in what you will become but rather in what you will avoid becoming. Those of you who knew me well knew I was having a lot of difficulties in life back then. I still struggle with some difficulties today but I've gotten a little wiser, the burden is a little lighter now and the struggle a little easier. I have six wonderful nieces and nephews, two grand-nephews and now a precious little grandniece I love and cherish very much. They're the closest thing I have to having my own kids. I now live alone in an apartment in south Macon after becoming unable to continue caring for my aging mother. I continue on in my search for complete peace and I have no doubt but that one day I will find it... or even make it myself. On the morning of Sept. 10, 2008, I awoke to the sound of the phone and it was my mother telling me that my father had died in an automobile accident. I just could not believe it. I had just spoken with him the night before when he called me. I was the last to hear his voice before this dreadful accident took him from us. I continue to grieve... On Sunday, April 19, 2009 I was able to gather a few family members together and I scattered my father's ashes over the grave of his mother, whom he lost when he was 15 and to whom he was so close. I gave him back to her. At least I have a measure of closure now...
