Gene's Story

Have 3 kids and a passle of grandkids, a dog named Oliver that rescued a cat named Lucky; but that’s a different story. I would have been, and was, very forgettable in high school. School at the time was not my best effort. I was not much of a social creature. Having lost an eye at 5 and wearing a prothesis I was very self-conscious, a loner with few friends. Let me see if my recollection is accurate. Back then I believe there were three different castes, Socialites, Jocks and Greasers (the Cali would be surfers). Unfortunately, I didn't fit in, so I was pretty much, well, forgettable. I was also a very poor student having to do post grad to get a diploma. I remember Mr. Jones he taught Electronics which I really got into and it became my vocation. In 1969 losing my eye in a car accident again "glass"and having read too much Robert Service and Jack London I left for Alaska wearing a patch. 11 years were spent in the bush trapping/fishing and working for RCA, ITT and FAA. With the FAA I attended the Monroney Aeronautical Academy in Oklahoma City over a nine year period. In 1982 I quit the FAA moved to Richland WA and started a pub, that our family ran for 20 years. rom the class of 76, started the first ISP in the Tri-Cities area and an R&D engineering company Belhaven Applied Technologies. B.A.T did a bunch of First-Of-A-Kind designs for Battelle, DOE, Intel and other companies in various countries. Very fortunate to have found a discipline that I loved and also paid the bills. Currently enjoy working as private contractor providing services to commercial and federal nuclear facilities. Worked out of Yangjiang, Guangdong province of the PRC from August 2014 through July 2015 on two facilities, Dongping town and Haiyung. New adventure, country and language. This project was to have been 4 months that turned into 14 so earned a big check mark next to China on my bucket list. Enjoy music, amateur radio, analog and digital design and learning 3D printing Lithophanes. Traveled to Saigon, Hanoi, Phu Quoc, Nha Trang, Ha Long Bay and The Mekong last year. Fun, exploration and a look back. What a change ...Beautiful country…great people and super cuisine being Asian with French influence. Not much on the social media sites but do enjoy looking through the Shadle Park yearbooks and seeing some familiar faces... so long ago. So happy that so many are doing well. Hi to all the survivors, best of wishes, keep swinging and don’t let the b-------s beat you down.
