Gene Stone:

CLASS OF 1959

Gene's Story

I would like to be remembered as someone who cared and that I made a positive contribution to my friends and associates and that my sons will have a better life because of all my hard work. To relax I read mostly historical non-fiction. I am a wanabe screen play writer and have an interest in digital film production. I have loved the game of chess since my early teens. The game relaxes me and let's me forget the day to day. I read a lot - I'm a history buff and have a large collection of sea treasure history books. I have one of three known copies of the 1789 Continental Congress proceedings held in Philadelphia published in 1791 and authorized by Jefferson - it contains the original Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, Constitution, and all the Indian and foreign treaties. I love books and have over 3000 books in my library. My playing weight in school was 190 lbs and how I miss those days. Ridding a desk for the last 30-years has helped my weight gaining program more than I want to admit. I never really liked exercise or weights. For the last several years my only real exercise has been competitive table tennis and walking. Great game. I wish I could say I did some wild things in school - my school years were pretty much sports, studies, and work. Although there was the baseball trip to play the Southern California frosh and we harassed the hookers and dropped water balloons from the sixth story and almost got kicked out of the hotel. I think I got a hit off their later to be hall of fame pitcher and ruined his no hitter. I guess I went skinny dipping a couple of times in my senior year. I think the class of 59 was very fortunate to have such fine teachers who really cared about our future. I am thankful for having a supportive step-father who was a Marine in WWII and Korea, several coaches who were great role models, and a teacher who made me promise that I would take care of my wife of almost 50 years. I miss the fresh oranges and lemons and th...Expand for more
e beach in CA. But the smartest thing I ever did was move to North Idaho - Coeur d' Alene. I love the change of seasons and since we live on 5-acres on a tree covered mountain side over looking the Spokane River and valley I have a place to work with privacy and peace and quiet. God is Good. My greatest surprise in life has been to see just how quickly the liberals have been able to set into motion the destruction of this great country and on our watch. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is George Thomas, because he and I were a couple of poor kids who lived across the alley from each other since the 7th grade. He played a dirty trick on me and I want to laugh about it with him one more time. I feel fortunate that I have three strong street smart sons who have tasted success and hard work as business owners and also learned how to play hard -something their dad forgot to do. There were so many good teachers to thank at ECVH but two coaches I would like to see again are Otterson and Fielder. They were terrific role models for young men. Very honorable men and good coaches. I would also like to say thank you to Dr. Richard Peterson for the promise he made me make. I have had a number of jobs in my life: paper boy, common laborer, recreation worker, stock boy, policeman, aircraft inspector, staff administrator, contracts administrator, Industrial relations manager, salesman, national sales manager, produce store owner, auction owner, used cars and equipment owner, equipment broker, and small corporation owner. If I have learned anything it has been that owning your own business or company is usually the only way you get paid what you are worth. If I had it to do all over I would have gone into sales right out of college and then into my own business. Amazing how hindsight is so 20-20. I think the class of '59 will be required to make some critical decisions about the future of America. I pray we are up to making the right decisions.
