George's Story

Life My time at Simms High School was brief. My father who was career Air Force and stationed at Malstrom AFB in Great Falls, moved our family up to Vaughn when he returned from his tour of duty in Viet Nam in July of 1969. In September of 1969 my cousin got killed in Vietnam and I guess at the time I had some stupid idea about wanting revenge. I didn't care any more about school or friends, I just wanted to go into the service. I turned 17 in November of 1969 and I talked my father into letting me enlist in the U. S. Navy in January 1970 I left Simms High School for the last time and went to boot camp. Following that I went to Bainbridge, MD for advanced training and then to a submarine tender in Charleston, SC. I put in a chit for Vietnam because they had opening for gunners on the river patrol boats. My chief told me it was a stupid idea, and after discussing it I spent the next five years safely tucked away on nuclear submarines. In 1977 I got out of the Navy and moved to Ogden, Utah where I got my associate degree in law enforcement. I worked for a number of years as a cop in Wyoming, and left as the Chief of Police in Marbleton, Wyoming in the mid 1980's. I completed my B.S. at Carter Oak College in Hartford, CT, and my Master's Degree from the University of Connecticut. I recently unloaded my own business because I was pretty burned out. My wife and I relocated from Connecticut to North Central Pennsylvania where I work as a therapist for troubled kids in a residential treatment center. I have worked as a therapist for sex offenders for the past 20 years, and I am also a polygraph examiner. I have slowed down a lot and presently test about three times a month for state and federal probation. I miss Montana a lot and I enjoyed my stay at Simms High School. Obviously I don't remember very many folks after all these years, but I do recall that Mr. McKenna was the Superintendent, and Sterling Nielsen was the bus driver. I spent a lot ...Expand for more
of time in the Vocational AG shop where I learned to gas weld, and I really loved it. I remember the band teacher had a real problem with his temper, and I remember the biology teacher was an interesting guy who had false teeth and drove an old Cadillac to school in the winter without a windshield. My Speech teacher was divorced, very attractive, and I really enjoyed her class. I mostly hung out in Vaughn with Becky Fryberger, Georgia Nielsen, and Becky Nielsen. There was also a kid in my class who lived in Big Sky Vista in Vaughn and his Dad ran the Texaco station, but I don't remember his name. He was a good kid though, and I think there was a girl named Virginia who lived across the street from us in Big Sky Vista, but I don't remember her last name either. My older brother Tom also attended Simms High School. He joined the Navy shortly after I did, and he retired a few years ago as a Commander. He is currently in Guam as the logistics guy for ammo. I am a member of the LDS church and my family and I attended the church between Vaughn and Simms. One of Becky Nielsen's sons served in the ward in Connecticut where I was serving as Bishop. I can't tell you how old I felt to meet Becky's son. ve been married to the same great gal since April of 1971, Sandra Jean Bailey whom I met in Connecticut. She was going to nursing school and I was going to submarine school. We feel in love and got married 30 days later. We've been together ever since and we raised three children together; two daughters and a son. We also have four grandchildren that we are very fond of, and within the next ten years we hope to go on a church service mission. I always planned to come back to Vaughn and Simms, but life doesn't work that way, and I now know there is no such thing as revenge. Leave it to the Lord. I've never had to take a life, and I find real meaning in being of service to other. Write if you want, I'll answer you. Best wishes and God Bless you. George
