George's Story
I went to college in Oregon, after Burbank High. I spent 2 years at Cascade College in Portland and then went to what was then called Oregon College of Education, Monmouth, Oregon.
The Viet Nam buildup caught up with me and I joined the Air Force. I was fortunate to be stationed at Beale Air Force Base, California for the full 4 years.
My world turned from what I learned in college to the practical world of retailing. From that point on I was involved in retail management.
I had an opportunity to go to Anchorage, Alaska and ran a hardware wholesale company for 7 years. What a great experience, in a part of the world that not too many people have the good fortune of going to.
I returned to the Lower 48 after that 7 years and relocated to the state of Illinois. I worked for Ace Hardware, corporate, traveling and assisting store owners i...Expand for more
n being better at what they do.
An opportunity came to buy a hardware store in Champaign, Illinois, home of the University of Illinois. That purchase was 15 years ago. I wouldn't trade that decision for anything. I have a staff of 25 employees that help me run the store.
I have 3 sons. One is a pilot for the Air Force, and will soon be flying drones this year at Creech AFB in Nevada. My second son had an opportunity, after working for Microsoft, to become a member of the staff at the Bill Gates foundation. I have one more son who is a student at Centennial High School in Champaign. One more year, and then on to college.
I've been very blessed to be able to travel and enjoy this wonderful world.
It is also great to look at the names from the class of '63 and see how many I remember, but probably more accurately, how many I've forgotten.
