George's Story
After just barely graduating fro AHS and a brief and unsuccessful attempt to avoid the draft by enrolling in NVCC, I
joined the Air Force. Radar Tech School at Keesler AFB, Biloxi Mississippi, and off to Clarke AFB, the Philippines. I was honorably discharged on April 1, 1970, and have had an enhanced appreciation of April Fools day ever since.
The best thing about being in the Air Force was having the opportunity to learn scuba diving on coral reefs in the crystal clear waters of the South China Sea. That is where I did the underwater photography that led to my next phase. Eventually I enrolled again in NVCC, got my AAS in Graphic Arts and Photography, and was invited to apply for the job of Photo Lab Manager and Teaching assistant. This was a very good fit for me and I stayed in that job for 33 years, retired in 2007.
I always loved working with my hands so I stayed involved with the model airplane hobby and then got interested in sailing. After spending a week on night watch sailing to Bermuda on a decrepit 27 foot wooden sailboat with a drunk Irishman and a drunk German fellow, I somehow decided that sailing was for me! So, if you ever happened to turn around in the cul de sac at the the end of Wayne Drive in Annandale between 1978 and May of 1981 you might have seen me working on the 32 foot deep keel sailboat (designed for single handed sailing, on commission by Jerry Cartwright) in the front yard of my parents home. I launched "New Moon" in May of '81 and lived aboard off and on over the years while docked at Hartge's Yard in Galesville, MD, commuting to work the afternoon and evening shift, Never ...Expand for more
made the great getaway to sail around the world but I had plenty of wonderful experiences in all kinds of weather, mostly exploring Chesapeake Bay. And yes, "New Moon" was the ultimate babe magnet. I finally gave her up because I never stopped being ambushed by bouts of sea sickness. Cruel irony, after three and a half years of construction and all the work of keeping the boat afloat.
My next and current project is the 1937 Dodge coupe I got in 2002, inspired by memories of the fun I had bombing around with Keith Fraser in his Studebaker Hawk. After many upgrades, she is now equipped with a warmed up smallblock Chevy 350 engine, 700r4 transmission, 3.70 posi rear end, rack and pinion steering, and disc brakes all around. Like the boat, there is always something more to do on an old car like this and more modifications are planned.
In the mean time, after many years of avoiding commitment in a sort of "catch and release" style of dating, I have been seeing the same lovely lady, Julie, for over 23 years. We seem to be stuck in the "if it ain't broke" phase and unwilling to risk escalation. It's all good!
Then along came Claudette. If you have ever had a precocious cat, I don't have to say any more. If you're not a cat person, I'd be wasting your time with my words. So . . .
Other than that, astronomy, collecting/ building a few guitars, yard work, housework, and counting my blessings, keeps me busy. I'm looking forward to the reunion and seeing all those great kids I admired so much for so many reasons. I believe there is a part of us that never grows old and this will be our chance to see if that's true.
