George's Story
I went to Kansas State University for a year and then returned to attend KCJUCO for a semester. I moved to San Diego, CA in 1973 with my folks. I attended Southwestern Junior College majoring in music. I began singing and playing music professionally around San Diego and met my wife Meg in 1975. We married in 1977. We moved to North Hollywood, CA in 1979 when I began a career in the studios. We started our family later than most and we are blessed with 3 sons. Ages 27,24 and soon to be 21.
I began a career in the Motion Picture industry building sets for television and movies in 1979. First at Universal Studios for 2 yrs then I went to work in the Prop Shop at Disney studios on "Tron" (the first one) and continued my career at Disney until 1986. I worked in the Special Effects dept for Disney on "Deacon Street Deer", "Mr. Boogety" and "Something Wicked This Way Comes". I eventually left Disney to work on "Growing Pains" as construction foreman for about 5 seasons. Working in construction and special effects on various films and television during hiatus, . I left the film industry and studied computer technology for 2 yrs. In 1993 I went to work for Coopers & Lybrand, an accoun...Expand for more
ting firm, as a computer tech for a few years. Low pay, suit , tie , competing against youngsters with degrees and working on the 45th floor of a skyrise in L.A. after the Northridge earthquake all contributed to my decision to return to more challenging and exciting work. I went back to the studios and worked exclusively in Special Effects until 2001. During that time I worked on many films and television shows doing pyrotechnic, mechanical and atmospheric effects. Some of the shows I worked on were "Casino", "Con Air", "General's Daughter", "We Were Soldiers Once...and Young", "X-Files" television and movie, and many more. The last project I worked on was the first season of "24". I loved the work, it was like being a big kid, but the hours were long and arduous, health issues forced me out of field work and into an office job at my labor union. I worked as a call board dispatcher, then became IT and Office manager in addition to assistant to the secretary treasurer. After 7 years in the office I began retirement. I moved to Oregon in 2010 and love it here. It did take a while to readjust to winter weather but I have always loved the outdoors and this is beautiful country.
