George's Story

Dropped out of UCLA 1965 as Physics Major-doing very badly becuase I was in love(choke, gag). Enlisted and served in US Army with 8th Special Forces Group in Central & So. America, 5th Special Forces Group Vietnam; BBA Acctg, Univ of Texas-Austin1972; Was "informed" I would be divorced if I returned to military and Special Forces, so went to work as Chief Acct, Tx Dept of Banking til 1982; Divorced in 1982, probably for the best. remarried 1986. Retired from as Director of Finance at Texas Law Enforcement Commission on August 31,2001. Then 9/11 happened and I went back to work with US State Dept til 2006, switched federal agencies and finally retired from federal work with FBI in 2014. Foreign languages include Spanish, Arabic and Persian. Forgot most all Persian and slowly forgetting Arabic. While in military had been to every country in Central America except Belize, some more than once (but it was no picnic). Nobody, but NOBODY would believe my life's story and the things I've seen and done. All this and have gone all through life without drinking or smoking. Sometimes I feel like Elmer Gump because I have a hard time believing it myself. My work at State Department was surreal, same-same at FBI. The last 14 years have been very rewarding, filled with experiences even I sometimes have a hard t...Expand for more
ime believing. Vietman came with such tremendous heartache that I still reflect on most every day. Lost so many very good friends back then. Now, live a somewhat reclusive life, read a lot of history (which I hated in school) and I do chores in greenhouse or tend to all manner of fruit trees and gardens on property that I affectionately refer to as "Crazy Woman Ranch" or "Mankiller Manor". Still enjoy my morning jogs or bicycle rides. Other hobby is Western Art oil painting-a dramatic switch from earlier life's experiences. Oil painting looks easy until you try it yourself. Then, back to the garden work, as instructed by "The War Department"(Wife). Every year I look forward to reunions with old but close Special Forces buddies, who are quickly dying off. I tell them they all sure look old now-and kind of ugly to boot! Regret not attending 50th Santa Ana HS reunion but was attending to some very serious matters at the time that had to be resolved before I could even consider retiring. Am hard-corps conservative and am convinced nothing, but nothing comes free but only through hard work. That said, the greatest joy to me are my three grown kids, all of whom graduated from major universities (Rutgers-Accounting, Baylor-PreMed, and Univ of Texas, Austin-BBA). Maybe, just maybe, I did something right.
