George's Story

Life Introduction: George's compositions and arrangements have been performed by bands, orchestras, and festival choirs throughout the Western United States. He is published by three publishing houses. Biography: George Edwin Smith has spent the last 36 years directing adult and children's choirs, orchestras, bands, as well as teaching guitar and musical theatre production courses at Yuba College, Merced Community College, and at various California high, junior high, and elementary schools and churches. As an adjudicator, he judges more than a dozen events each year. Writing his first piece for wind band at age 12, Smith set the stage for his career. He won his first composition contest at age 19, and won his first international prize at age 20. He has a degree in Music Composition and Geology from San Jose State University, where he studied under Higo Harada, Tikey Zes, Brent Heisinger, and Alan Strange. Today, he devotes much of his energy writing music for orchestras, bands, and choirs for budget...Expand for more
-strapped fellow music directors, and often customizes music for smaller school ensembles. This past season, The Dallas Wind Symphony "America's Premier Windband" performed the world premiere of Smith's composition, "from within the pristine columns" . His latest premiere was a performance of "Conversations for Orchestra", by the Young Artists Symphony in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. George has settled in Newman, CA, where he lives with his wife, Maria, and teaches Instrumental Music in nearby Gustine. He actively composes several new works each year. Together, George and Maria have three children, Jonathan, who is on staff at Catholic University of America in Washington D.C., Melissa Lynne, who graduated from California State University, Stanislaus and works for Ameriprise Financial Consultants, and Jessica Noelle, who is on staff at California State University, Fresno. George still frequents the beaches in the Monterey/Santa Cruz area in order to absorb those positive ions!
