George's Story

Life My History After high school, I spent a couple of years at Marist College before entering the US Navy on a Reserve program. I spent most of my time stationed at Moffet Air Station in Mountain View, California, working as an avionics technician. Afterwards, I moved to Omaha, NE and worked for my brother as a maintenance man at an apartment complex for about a year. In 1977, I moved to Texas and took up residence in San Antonio, TX. Fifteen years later in 1992, I moved to the Atlanta GA area and have been here ever since. My Spouse We met at a work related Christmas party, 1978. We were married in Sept. of 1979. If you are counting, that's over 29 years ago. We celebrated our 25th anniversary in August, 2005, with a cruise to Alaska, and will be celebrating our 30th this summer with a Mediterranean cruise. My Pets Kimmy, a second hand Miniature Pinscher that we had for almost six years, was put to sleep in January of 2004. It still breaks my heart when I think about her sometimes. My Kids My son, Robert, born in 1981, is a graduate of the University of Georgia. He left Georgia to move to Los Angeles, and after two years there, he recently moved back home. My daughter, Caroline, was born in 1986 and in now in her senior year at the Medical College of Georgia. She will be graduating in May, 2009 with her BSN. We have been "empty nesters", and... not. My Career I have been in technical services for my whole career, starting as a field service technician for Lanier Business Products (dictation equipment) in 1977. I spent over 18 years with Lanier, leaving in 1996 to join the company I now work for which does IT outsourcing. I am the Senior Director of Client Support Services for Siemens IT Solutions and Services. My Hobbies I enjoy technical things - building and maintaining my own PC's and home network, remodeling, home maintenance, auto-mechanics, woodworking, etc. I am a "do-it-yourselfer" because I enjoy seeing the things that I have done or created around the house. My wife thinks I do it because I don't like to pay to have someone else do it. We're both right, although lately there are certain things worth paying to have done. I only recently started giving my auto repairs to a local mechanic. I just don't have the time anymore. I love trout fishing in the streams of north GA, but haven't been in a couple of years. The best fishing I have ever done was in the Rapid Creek in South Dakota. I caught a 27" rainbow trout there a few years ago. That's a memory that won't quit. I also enjoy golfing, but only get to go once or twice a year. I seem to spend most of my personal time developing and maintaining a service management tool I created for our company. And of course, I still love to sing. My Television Shows The shows I consider "must see" are LOST, 24, American Idol, The Office and 30 Rock, although 30 Rock is getting a bit too slapstick for my tastes. Other shows my wife and I like to watch are Celebrity Apprentice, Survivor, Dancing with the Stars, and Desperate Housewives. Shows I avoid on purpose are Grey's Anatomy, Two and A Half Men, Boston Legal, Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader, and anything with Bill Maher. We watch Fox News Channel after waking up on the weekends. I'll try to never miss a UGA football game and like to catch the San Antonio Spurs on TV on occasion. Wow! Putting that all down in writing looks like a lot of TV. Thank goodness we have a DVR and can skip most of the commercials. Favorite Movies I enjoy watching movies. Some of my favorites are The Shawshank Redemption, The Godfather (1&2), Goodfellas, Apocalyps Now, The Deer Hunter, Full Metal Jacket, For...Expand for more
rest Gump, Philadelphia, Big, Tootsie, Office Space, Rushmore, King Pin, Ace Ventura Pet Detective, Happy Gilmore, Meet the Parents, etc. I wish I enjoyed some of the "comic book" movies more than I do - I see them all, but the only ones I consider really worthwhile are the Spiderman movies, although I thoroughly enjoyed Ironman and The Dark Knight. Some of the better movies I have seen recently are Slumdog Millionaire, and a really outstanding documentary called "Man On Wire". See that one and you'll wonder where the heck you were in 1974. My Social Life We usually go out to our favorite Mexican restaurant on Friday evenings and then mix it up a little on Saturdays, depending on our appetites. I hate going to the movies. There is always someone in the audience who seems to be intent on ruining the experience for everyone. a couple of years ago I completed a home theater room in our basement and that is where you will find me on Friday and Saturday nights. Thank you, NetFlix, and you too, BluRay. My Music I have varied tastes in music, with favorite artists in all genres except Rap, Hip-Hop, R&B. The way I prefer to listen to music is by using the shuffle feature of my Ipod (or Itunes at home). I find it interesting to hear my selections fed to me in no particular order. Now if they could (or would) only do that with satellite radio. My Philosophy on Life and Love I have done a lot of study over the years, and my personal philosphy has evolved to this: Stuff happens. Why do bad things happen to good people? Stuff happens. Why do bad people succeed? Stuff happens. Why does an entire section of the US Gulf Coast or a remote South Pacific paradise get devastated? Stuff happens. People may pray for stuff to happen, and sometimes their prayers are answered. Stuff happens. It is a big, powerful, sometimes good and sometimes bad world out there. Don't be surprised when stuff happens. God commands us to love one another. God's love for man was demonstrated by sacrificing his only son for us. He knows us as imperfect creatures who need to know we matter, are cared for, and will be accepted without judgment. That's all we need to know about anyone, really. Love is the fulfillment of those needs in others. It is the uplifting of someone's spirit by making them feel important. It is the warmth they feel when knowing someone cares. It is the grace they feel when they are accepted without judgment. We can make people feel important by our kind words of praise and respect. We can care for people who have suffered pain and loss. We can accept people regardless of their circumstances, knowing full well that "there but for the grace of God go I". Love is the act of passing on what God did for us to others. It is the key to success in life, for you reap what you sow. It truly makes the world go 'round. My Future I am starting to look forward to retirement. There are so many things I enjoy doing that I haven't been able to make the time for. I don't see myself in a position to spend all my time traveling and working on my hobbies. Like many of us, I'm sure, I will have to continue to earn extra income to make it through, but I look forward to something with less pressure and more fun that what I do today. I'll consider having two or three days off every week without thinking about work a qualified retirement. My Thanks I appreciate your interest, to make it this far. Thanks for visiting, and to anyone I've ever met, I'd appreciate hearing from you. You can contact me by addressing an electronic mail using my first name and last name separated by a period at a popular mail service that begins with a Y.
