George F's Story
George F. Walker, Jr. is currently President of George F Walker Consulting Services, a consulting group dedicated to assisting clients measurably improve performance for passenger, freight and transit railroad and bus companies through the use of diagnostic assessments, process reviews and the development and installation of performance management and monitoring systems. Recent projects have included assisting HDR, Inc. prepare several successful State High Speed Rail Grant Applications by developing a locomotive purchase plan and a System Safety Plan. In addition, he developed one of the first FTA compliant Safety and Security Oversight Programs for the City and County of Honolulu Department of Transportation to use in the supervision of the Oahu Transit Services.
Prior to forming GFWCS, George served as Senior Vice President of Operations for MTA Metro-North Railroad, a subsidiary of New York CityâÂÂs Metropolitan Transportation Authority. nance of the fleet and right of way, operating rules, safety and security, as well as customer service activities. In addition, George had direct accountability for the operation and maintenance of Grand Central Terminal.
Before assuming overall responsibility for Metro-North Operations, George was Metro-NorthâÂÂs Chief Mechanical Officer, responsible for the acquisition and maintenance of locomotive and passenger car fleets. Among other accomplishments, George developed and installed an integrated approach to railroad fleet management around the principles of reliability-centered maintenance.
George began his railroad career in San Francisco as a brakeman/switchman trainee at Southern Pacific Railroad rising to the position of Director of Training and Development where he developed programs addressing all levels of railroad personnel from the operating and maintenance crafts through executive management.
Previous to his railroad career, George worked as a contractor for the U. S. Department of Defense developing training programs for the U. S. Army, and as a process and productivity improvement consultant in both North and South America.
